Hello all, this is addressed more so to junior EM attendings and EM trainees.

I'm an academic pathologist, and recently one of our junior faculty (5 years in practice, age likely pushing 40) announced that they are quitting pathology to begin a residency in EM.

Although I have heard of pathologists successfully transitioning into clinical specialties, neither have I before personally known these individuals, nor do I know of any of them having shifted to EM.

Any thoughts from folks who have seen this transition are sought.

Thanks!

I don't see a problem with it - they'll have ~20 years left to practice after residency. EM is a challenging field - shift work/nights, erratic, stressful, high stakes, difficult patients, but they'll be happy if they enjoy the field and have a balanced life.

I did a post sophmore fellowship in pathology and cjanged my mind that i wanted to do clinical. It looks a little wierd on your app, but if you're dedicated and motivated you should be able to secure a position and make it through residency

Hmm. My uncle is an academic pathologist. One of the smartest fellas that I know.

Age ain't nothing but a number. I met a patient who was 73 the other day, and is/was in better shape that I ever will be.

I had a 38 year old patient today that I swore was in her late 60s, given her career smoking/drinking status.

When I'm 83, I want to do a residency in epigenetic pathology. Doesn't exist yet, but neither does the robot arms and legs that I'll have.
