as for me , two weekend s on call( one friday-sunday and the other saturday) and 2 off....as i understood it . and a 2 month NF starting first year itself.
thank god for the 4 week vacation .

We don't have night float. Our month-long rotations vary from Q3 to Q5 call. We average 4 days off a month. 3 weeks vacation a year.

For what specialty? Do you mean entire weekends (Sat-Sun) off? They have those?
For IM:
My schedule varies from Q3 (VA ICU/CCU), Q4 o/n (Univ. Units), Q5 w/ night float (VA floor), Q5 o/n (Univ. Floor). 7 total call months. 2 weeks VA night float, 4 weeks vacation, 2-4 weeks ER w/ variable shift schedule, 1 month Geri floor (PA staffed o/n), 1 ambu month and 6-8 wks consult electives.

i was not counting friday night.. .for all practical purposes.....it would be too much to expect friday , saturday and sunday off in residency

Night float rocks. The hospitals I'm rotating at through residency don't have any overnight call anymore. You have the nightfloats and even in the ICU's you have an ICU night float team. It rocks.

So only short call for me (ie leave by 8-10p.m)

Doing emergency medicine so no call most of the 3 years anyway., but on my offservice rotations i'll have night float!! yipppee!

oh, and did I mention my ED shifts are 8's !!

We have one "golden weekend" a month in which we have both Saturday and Sunday off.

Our night float runs from Sunday night to Thursday night, so you are done on Friday morning and don't come back until Sunday night. It's nice to have every Saturday off, but the downside is, you're on night float. It's a pretty rough month, since the intern and the senior are the only residents in our ~250 bed hospital. But you learn a ton. We have 4 weeks of night float in our intern year and then two weeks in our second and third year.

And we get 3 weeks of vacation a year.

About 75% of them are. There are some general surg and some ortho patients, but the majority are FP/IM (all of which we cover).

Transitional Year - below is what i have put together before orientation.

4 wks vacation
weekends (and holidays off) on almost all months unless on call. average 4-5 calls a month.

2 interns cover 300 beds when on call.

Atleast I'll have many "golden" weekends in the great city of chicago.

Wow I agree - I'd go insane taking care of 200+ patients.

Yeah our program averages 4 days off a month. Inpatient you never get a golden weekend since you always have to come in one of those days to insure continuity of care, whether you're on call or not (which makes Sunday call VERY appealing). Outpatient you take call for other services, but I think I had one golden weekend... it was so long ago...

We have night float system so on most ward months, we have only two overnight weekend calls a month:

1) Friday to Saturday (Sunday off)
2) Saturday to Sunday ("black" weekend)

Then, there's one Sunday shortcall--night float takes over at 8pm (Saturday off).
And finally, there's one "golden" weekend with Saturday and Sunday off.

So, it averages 4 days off a month.

Another man doing gas. Generally we have 2 weekends off completely. sometimes a thursday call means 3 day weekend. Post call we ALWAYS leave at 7 am. next day pretty much do what you want. Working about 60-65 hrs/wk. Life is definitely more manageable than the intern year (i.e medicine).
