What's up guys,
I was looking for some advice on buying equipment. I'm a first year student and am going to be buying all my stuff this week. What brand (Heine, Welsch-Allyn, Keeler) would you suggest for the Ophth and Retinoscope? Does it make a difference? Thanks.

All the equipment works the same. Get the one that feels the best in your hand. I have Keeler and love it. They feel nice, work great and look great. The Heine feel strange to me. I think the handle is to small and the head is to big. It is like holding one of those oversized lolly-pops, at least to me. The Welsch-Allyn work fine too. I think they feel cheap, but most people get it because most people have it. I have used all three brands, and they all work just fine. Just get the one the feels right.

w.a. are the most popular so it's the easiest to source for parts if req.

I have a WA and love it....but I'm sure you've heard..."they all are great". I know, it's frustrating.
Just pick up each one, roll the dials and figure out how to put them together and turn them on.
One plus with
wa, to me, they seem to stay charged longer than the other brands.
But just try holding and moving things on each brand and see if you come up with a preference. Supposedly you can't go wrong.

I have the Keeler diagnostic set. Most of the people in my class got it, too. I think the year before me, the Welch Allyn set was the most popular. In the end, it doesn't really matter, you'll be fine with any of them. 😉

I would go with either Heine or Keeler, both seem to be quality instruments that are durable. The Welch-Allyns that I have seen always seem to have "squeaky" parts and just feel cheap to me. Just my $0.02.

My personal favorite is Keeler.
Welsh Allen is the most popular.
I haven't experienced Heine so I can't say.
I'm sure all three are fine.
Keeler is slow at sending you replacement parts.
If your in a situation where the batteries run out and you have to ask someone to borrow a battery fast chances are they have a Welsh Allen. 🙄
Pearle for Keeler owners... Unscrew the bottom red part on your battery and you'll find it can be charged with the welsh allen charger next to the slit lamp. ... but you all probably already knew that. 😛
