I am planning on applying for DO schools, but my stats are terrible. I graduated from high school in 2005 and spent the next couple years at one community college basically failing but staying in school for god knows what reason. I was ejected from this first community college and then started attending second CC across town. I decided to get my act together and started to take my coursework seriously. I eventually transferred to a UC school and earned a B.S. in Molecular Biology. So basically the snapshot of my three transcripts looks something like this:

First Community College:
Basic Keyboarding: F
Music Theory: F
Logic: B
Anthropology: F
the list goes on
Overall GPA: 0.90

Second Community College:
Biology: B
General Chemistry: B
General Chemistry: C
Soc/Psych: A/B
Overall GPA: 2.85

UC:
Organic Chemistry: A
Organic Chemistry: B
Biochem: B
Molec Bio: B
Stats: A
Sporadic C's throughout
Overall GPA: 2.88

I scored a 24M on the MCAT.

As you can see my grades went from terrible to average. I have little clinical experience but am working currently as a Vet Tech. I have been looking in to volunteering and shadowing. My main question is do the schools factor in all of my non pre-req classes such as music theory because these classes are bringing my overall gpa down quit a bit. If they do factor these grades in then this means I can merely repeat very basic courses like this to raise my gpa which seems kind of weird because who cares how good I am at reading sheet music. Anyway...any help is appreciated.

Thank you!

Go back to that CC and retake these class you had C or lower along with sciences classes that you had also C or lower. If you got A and B on them , your GPAs will increase substantially since DO schools use grade replacement. You want your GPAs to be 3.3+. You might be able to get your GPAs up to that mark in a year if you can manage to take about 30 credits for that whole year. Then you should retake the MCAT and aim for 27+.

With a cGPA or <3.0, anda 24 MCAT, I can't see any DO school taking you, even the newest ones. You need to get that cGPA >3.0, and ideally, improve the MCAT by at least 2 more points.

Suggest some post-bac bio classes, like A/P, micro, pharm, genetics, cell bio
