What causes increased risk of RDS in c-sectioned babies?

And neonatologist attending says the whole cortisol surfactant thing is wrong, even though goljan say so...

I never bought the whole cortisol thing either, since the timeline seemed too short to make a real difference. Hm.

Yeah, that's what I learned leads to transient tachypnea of the newborn (or, at least what's often responsible). So it's not a far stretch of the imagination to assume that it could also lead to RDS.

maybe it's just cause babies born by c-section are more likely to be preterm.

It's not that risk of RDS is increased in C-sectioned babies per say, but rather RDS is a fetal complication of pregestational DM. Mothers with pregestational DM will inadvertently have a C-section b/c of macrosomia. So in a way, yes, the RDS risk is increased in c-sectioned babies, but it is not because of the c-section that the RDS occurs. Does that make sense?

It really is the method of delivery, it's an independent risk factor, and one of the rare actually studied facts in L&D 😉 If you read the citations at the end of the article in the link below, you can see some of the primary studies. Getting pushed out makes it less likely baby will aspirate -this makes mechanical sense, if you think about trying to inhale while being wrapped in a contracting uterus, vs trying to breathe while being pulled out of a non-contracting, sliced open uterus. I'd be less likely to think GDM was an issue compared to say, malpresentation and atony screwing with your data -atony is a big time contributor to C/S (arrest) and would also mechanically be less helpful in keeping baby from aspirating.
