Are there any sort of criteria for the courses to be deemed acceptable for calculating your BCMP GPA?

Specifically, I took a "math for people who have the math competence of a salad shooter" course nearly 10 years ago. I got an A, of course, and would prefer that this be considered a math course and be calculated in with my BCMP GPA. Of course I am skeptical that they would count this?

So is there a site/page that indicates what specifically is calculated into the BCMP GPA?

you can definitely have that counted towards BCPM as a math course. AMCAS counted my "statistics for psychology" class as a math course. they also took a lot of my speech pathology and audiology courses as biology because the had words like anatomy and physiology in the course titles. they even took my two quarters of independent study. there should be a list of criteria in the AMCAS application instructions. you might have to search a bit cause it's around 60 pages long.

Usually, schools have different mini-schools within them. In our schedule of classes, we have a school of physical sciences, biological sciences, arts, humanities, social science, etc. Math for us is under physical science along with chem, o-chem, and physics. Bio is under bio, of course 🙂 CHeck which department your class is in and you'll most likely get your answer. Good Luck!

P.S. We also have the option for course-order transcripts which already divides our classes into the respective mini-sections I mentioned above. See if you can get a hold of that..

so wait a second, i took a class called "exploring communication sciences" it was basically an intro level speech path course that i took to fulfill a core. does that count in my BCPM GPA?

to the OP, don't they not count classes after a certain number of years? that's just what one of my profs told me when he said he considered going to med school, the classes he took as an undergrad years ago don't count.

Can anyone confirm this???

What do you guys think about "Psychobiology" and "Advanced Psychobiology", both listed in the psych dept?

I had a teacher that I would consider to be an Advanced Psycho-Biology teacher...she taught Cell Bio though and i think we are talking about two different things.

The instructions on the AMCAS site seem to have very specific course-type categories...however, Medstylee seems to have had good luck with similar courses????

Hey all!

It is not they do not count those courses. It is just that med schools want that applicants have recent exposure to premed classes/prereqs. They all still count. You just may have to take some of them over depending on how long ago the courses were taken. Different schools have different cut-offs in how long ago courses should have been taken. I would consult each school separately to find all this out. In general and as aforesaid, schools want recent coursework in the sciences to show that students are still rather proficient. Keep in mind that on average only MCAT scores from the past 2 or 3 years can be used so many people would retake the classes anyway to brush up on the material for the MCAT. Any college course you have taken and gotten a grade and credit for counts and should be included on the application including retaken classes. 🙂
