I really love Pomona College for the following reasons:
  • You get the best of both worlds with the Consortium.
  • The personality fits me perfectly- intellectual, but not 'nerdy', per se.
  • They pay for so much to enrich your social and educational experience.
  • FOOD IN SOCAL
  • IT'S BEAUTIFUL
I'm looking at a couple other schools (to aim for):
  • Pomona
  • Pomona
  • Pomona
  • Pomona
  • Pomona
  • Brown
  • Penn
  • Yale
  • Rice
  • Pomona
  • Pomona
  • POMONA <3
Do you guys have any ideas for any other schools I might like? Also, safety schools and matches? Thanks! 🙂

Oh, also, they have an all around amazing curriculum, and there's so much opportunity for you.

The closest Del Taco to Pomona College is a full two miles away from the center of campus. Google says that's a 42 minute walk AND you still have to walk back AND your stomach is going to be full. If you're going consortium, you're much better off applying to Pitzer College because that'll cut at least 15 minutes off your travel time.

You had better take Pomona off your list. Aren't you glad you dodged that bullet?

Eh, Harvard is beautiful too. And intellectual. Definitely not nerdy, per se. Cambridge has some decent restaurants. It's a pretty enriched social and educational experience.

And if you don't like those pesky grad students, Amherst is a decent fall-back.

Make sure to check it out!

Lmfao Amherst as a fall-back? Last time I checked, that school is super selective! But those are great suggestions, thanks!

Okay, tbh, that isn't really enough to make me go quite that far. Pomona is like my perfect fit. It has an Economics, Philosophy, and Politics major, a Neuroscience major, a Theatre minor, they pay for your private music lessons, have a decent social scene, especially with CMC and Pitzer, and it's a great school. They encourage learning for the sake of expanding your knowledge, and give you so many opportunities to do so. Also, it's within driving distance of LA, without everything in the immediate vicinity costing LA prices. It's amazing. Also, their financial aid is reputed to be tippy-top. I almost shed a tear thinking about how perfect this place is. <3

If you choose Pomona over the Ivy league you are being quite short sighted. Yes you might have a better time in college (maybe) but those four years fly by and guess what -- a parchment from an Ivy is potentially going to be more valuable to you for the subsequent 50 after that. pomona is a great school and you can go far from there but on the list you provided it shouldn't be the top choice given your lofty career aspirations in other threads. Of course if your chances at those others you listed are unrealistic then go.

I went to an Ivy League school, I can tell you one thing, as an undergraduate student, you mean absolutely nothing to the faculty there, the faculty at Ivy League schools are there to do research, the people who get their attention are the Phd students doing dissertations, you are lucky if you get even the time of day from any one, that being said, if you have thick skin, the piece of paper that you get can really help you in the real world.

I was shocked at what one of my professors at my undergraduate school earns, he teaches 6 hours a week and earns over $250,000 a year with full benefits. My Pharmacology professor in medical school earns only one third of that.

On top of that 250k salary he gets over 1 million dollars a year in grants.

Irrelevant, though accurate. The question posed was if you could theoretically get into all of Pomona, Yale, Penn, Brown or Rice, how should you rank them. OP, based largely on social/educational enrichment, geography and food would put Pomona first. I'm not sure that's the smart move, especially given OPs medical/political aspirations.

It really depends upon the Ivy League school, the truly prestigious Ivy League schools are Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, the others are also great schools, but you have non Ivy League schools that are as good as the top 3 like Stanford, MIT, and Duke.

Duke is not in the same category as HYPSM. Let's get that out of the way.

And I hope you're both aware you're talking to a 14 year old OP.

Actually Duke is one of the most selective universities in the country, and its in the same category as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and MIT. I would also add Columbia University as well.

The other four Ivy League schools are good but not as good as the top 4.

I don't think many people are going to agree with you on this one. HYPSM is its own level of brand recognition, selectivity, and public prestige. That's why the acronym exists.

Really? I recall a friend of mine at Duke says they have a T-shirt they sell on campus that says "Harvard, the Duke of the East". Duke is one of the best undergraduate schools in the country its better than the bottom four Ivy League schools.

I think your friend needs to get out more. Many people on the west coast have never heard of Duke.

Actually he is from Los Angeles. The best Ivy League schools seem to be consistently Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia. You also have schools that are not Ivy League such as Stanford and MIT which are on the same level as those four universities. The other four Ivy League schools are good but not as good as the four I mentioned.

If you say so. Though this is the first time (iirc) that I have heard someone say that Duke is above any Ivy League school.

HYPS

But even here, I'd say H > S > P > Y.

Ivies derive the bulk of their prestige from HYP. But you can definitely make the argument that Duke is better than Brown or Cornell.

Cornell is probably the worst Ivy League school, its known as the easiest one to gain admission, and also has a high suicide rate.

I don't think Ivy league people not attending Columbia would ever put it on the same pedestal as Harvard, Yale or Princeton.

But I think you are going way off on a tangent considering the OP would rank Pomona above Yale, apparently.

A small liberal arts college like Pomona would never compare to a school like Yale. Columbia is one of the finest universities in the country, has several alumni that are US Presidents including the current one. Also two both Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt attended Columbia University.

Also I did not state that Duke was superior to Harvard, Princeton, and Yale, but in many ways its comparable to those universities, and it attracts students whose stats are comparable. In recent years Duke has received negative press because of some cases of student misconduct.

Stanford and Duke are known for having two of the most infamous US Presidents in American history, Herbert Hoover attended Stanford and Richard Nixon attended Duke, neither university is particularly proud of either of these two. Hoover was widely blamed for the misery of the Great Depression, and Nixon's Presidency ended in scandal and disgrace.

Harvard graduated probably the most beloved American leader in modern history, John F Kennedy, who unfortunately lost his life.

Could it be because he was born during the Bush Jr. administration?

Obama has not inspired much confidence either, so much that Donald Trump has become the front runner for President in 2016, its quite unprecedented.

Attending a university like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, Duke would definitely open a lot of doors.

I'm a Carson supporter FYI.

And seriously, stop putting Duke with HYPSM it sounds weird
