What constitutes "work" in a research lab?

As per Buffalo's secondary: "Have you ever worked in a research laboratory?"

I have participated in a laboratory, but never been paid. Unsure of how to answer this question.

Does participating in a laboratory mean you have worked for credit or volunteered in a lab under the direction of a PI or does this mean you did this as part of a class?

If the former, just explain this, if the latter, this is a "no"
