I know there are few research experience thread.

but, what counts as research experience?

I have been working in a lab to process the specieman, and change the solution of the speciemen. The work may sounds simple. But it is a crucial step to get the data to help our lab to publish papers. Is this a research experience? Thanks! 🙂

yeah, that sounds fine. make sure you know the research well enough to answer questions during your interview

I think you are playing a small role in the research, and that should be mentioned. You could maybe stretch your role a little more to make it sound more meaningful...

In bio lab one time I did some research on how tall grass grows in a styrofoam cup under a uv lamp for a week. ground-breaking stuff...

how long have you been involved in this research and how many hrs/week did you put in?

process and change the solution of the specimen?? what does that mean? what specimen are you dealing with? confused 😕

I studied IPL1-cells during cell division and the understanding of IPL1-cells help us to understand cancer cells better. This is what I put under research experience. I think what you do is actually follow under work experience not research experience. But again, you can always make an argument for it during the interview.

research = Scholarly/scientific investigation/inquiry & the thorough investigation is such that it can be presented in a detailed & accurate manner.

Work experience.

Personally, I wouldn't list something as research experience unless you have spent at least 2 semesters on the project. There is not much to experience if you've only spent 1 semester investigating.

Also, if you are not being paid, then it is research. If you are being paid, then it is research/work.

I extracted chicken embryo at different developmental stages and treat them with different solutions in order for the bones to be stained. Then I look for the mutants. These mutants are then given to other lab members for different studies. Basically, the goal is to figure out the biochemical pathway of cleft lip formation during embryogensis. I am also responsible building plasmids with inserts that contain the gene from chicken using a software package.

So, overall I am not given a project to do myself. I am pretty much helping out pHD students and post-doc doing their project. That's why I have problem figure whether it's research if I am helping out a project.

if you are independently working on the project (i.e. carrying out digestions, ligations, and transformations, etc) then list it.
