what did/do you say at the interview?

Yes, that's very effective. Brigham offered me a position outside of the Match after I said just that.

😉

Don't forget to mention that you have an addictive personality and you've always wondered what it would be like to have midazolam or fentanyl on board, all the time.

they appreciate the humor, right?
i mean, they've heard every canned answer in the universe....

i talked to a colorectal surgeon recently, and he said he went into it solely because it took only 1 extra year of training.

I'll tell you what I didn't say at the interview. I didn't ask about strengths/weaknesses or many subjective questions. For the strengths/weaknesses, I had my own criteria and asked in a way that required cold hard facts. How many pedi-hearts? Lung Tx? Both echo and nerve stim methods of regional anesthesia? Number of regional blocks? Number of elective months? Number of residents doing well enough on the ITE after CA2 to pass it for real? Etc, etc. I know that the program meets the minimum requirements, but I want to see what else they have to offer. I had many an interviewer tell me that they were refreshing questions and were glad that I was not another applicant asking them strengths/weaknesses for the 50th time.

I felt that asking the interviewers things like how well they get along with the surgery teams, how well residents were prepared by graduation, if there's head-butting with CRNAs, etc, were all pretty juvenile questions and did not ask them. Any interviewer would answer positively, but they cannot back it up with facts like my previous questions. I'd hear applicants ask these even at the end of the interview season. If you are compelled to ask, then ask the residents instead. You may get a more truthful answer and not look as silly in front of your interviewer.

I had a great conversation with one of my interviewers about the role of black sabbath in the evolution of rock and roll. He is a big black sabbath fan as am I.

if you had mentioned this earlier, and which program, it would have influenced my list.

alas, sabbath is long gone, although i recommend you try Electric Wizard if you want to hear a band still kicking it Sabbath-style.

UAB - Dr. Andrews was in a a band that covered black sabbath, led zep and other heavy bands. My hubby is in a stoner rock band so I am familiar with loads of bands like electric wizard. His band (my husband's not Dr. Andrews!)was on the man's ruin label before it went defunct. The majority of my interview was talking gear (solid state vs tube and mesa boogies vs marshals)- I hope that was a good thing. Nothing like the sound of a tube right before it blows in my opinion.

see... and i only put UAB as low as #5 because of location (a little out of the way for me). but if i knew dr. andrews was in a stoner rock cover band i might have made them #3 or 4... i wonder if i do interventional pain and get to choose the OR music if i'll ever get to hear Godflesh beating down over the sterile field.

such are my goals.

Godflesh! I definitely think it is a possibility!
