I am curious. What do most dental students do in the summer?
Do you go to the beach or study and get ready for the broad? Any way to earn extra income?

It differs from school to school...

Most schools give you a good summer off after freshman year.

Second year is a bit different. Some schools actually have their students take the NBDE Part I during December of their Sophomore year, but most have their students take the Part I in July after 2nd year. My school takes our NBDE Part I in July, which means you spend most of your sophomore summer studying. 😛

Third year also varies... Some schools like NYU gives you only 2 weeks off for your 3rd year summer. Others like mine has a mandatory externship requirement which means you are required to work somewhere (at a hospital, at the dental school, etc.). I did my 3-week externship at New York City's Bellevue Hospital (Oromaxillofacial Surgery Department).

The summer after my 4th-year? I'm taking a 2-month vacation before going off to find an associateship.

Taking a vacation after you graduate is well deserved! I wish I would have!

Marquette does not have summers off!

I actually am working so that i can pay for rent... then going on to hawaii for a week .. then loungin around for another 2 weeks... after the first year, you definitely need to take a break and RELAX! after the first year, you will feel BURNT OUT! so if i didn't need to make money paying for rent, i would spend my ENTIRE summer vacationing! BUT, another option would to do research if you are interested in specializing ... If I had planned well enough, i would just try to get some R&R ALLLL summer...

I didn't take any time off this past summer, but I'm definitely vacationing over winter break. I swore I would never be one of those people who take cruises on their student loans, but my living allowance is generous enough that I'm considering putting a few hundred in the bank each month in order to take a 10-day Belize travel course with a couple bio profs undergrad. We'll see whether the finances work out 😀

The Medical College of Georgia has generously scheduled a seven day reprieve from classes between fall and summer semesters for the freshmen.

*assumes a wholly unprofessional and childishly petulant whine*

...even though the sophomore class just above us got 6 weeks of summer when they were freshman.

I'm beginning to suspect that life may not be fair. 🙂
