So i was accepted to one school, sent in a deposit, and since i was accepted to a different school which i would rather go to. I know the deposit and not refundable, but i just checked and the check has not cleared yet. I have tried to call the school, but i can not get through to anyone. I suppose i could just put a hold on the check, but i think that would be pretty rude. Any suggestions about what i should do? Thanks

I'd just take the loss. ... You could always (as you said) try to put a hold on the check and try to recover the money, but I don't think that would be very prudent. Plus, if you're thinking of specializing later on, an action like that could potentially hurt your chances ...

You did know that deposits were non-refundable.

It comes down to whether canceling the check is something you feel comfortable doing.

Think of it this way, you have two acceptances! There are others who would love to be in your shoes!

CANCEL IT

At this point, it's a business decision. Nothing personal. No hard feelings. Your future is what's most important.

A stop on a check will cost you around 20 bucks depending on your financial institution.

If they cash it, you lose $500-$3000.

No brainer, minimize losses and be a little selfish! It's not hard and you might even like it and try it again sometime. 👍 (just think of all the things you can buy with the saved money that is now yours again)

cancel it. now.

i'd cancel it and not think anything of it. its not like you will get blacklisted or anything...

First, cancel the check. Second, call the school/e-mail and explain your financial situation stating clearly that you cannot afford two deposits and that you appreciate their acceptance, but ultimately you decided for the D school. :luck:

Seriously, if it's not illegal i'd cancel it. I can think of a lot of things you can do with that cash. Anyone giving you shat about doing the "morally right" thing shouldn't sway your decision. How much is the deposit?

Cancel, whats the worst that could happen they withdraw their offer.

Remember possecion is 9/10 the law. Did you sign anything?

Or you could withdraw all the money from your account let the check bounce and you would have to pay fee's... Then all they would think is you are a dead beat.

I had a dream all my secondary application checks bounced, and was rejected from every school..
