What do US students usually do after MS1

I'm a canadian med student and I was wondering what US med students usually do during the summer after first year. Are there electives that would take you guys in despite your limited clinical training? Or is it mostly research/R&R?

Research. and make sure any relationships are still intact.

my medical school also has preceptorships you can do in Family Med/Pediatrics/ and a short 1 week program in Emergency Medicine. They even pay a little. I will be doing research for 4-6 weeks nd relaxing for the rest of the break. And my research includes time in clinics so it is a win-win for me!

Many students do research. At our school there is a lot of clinical stuff you can get involved in like rural health, free clinics, etc.

I spent the summer between first year and second year on a warm beach in a foreign country - where I met my girl friend. Time well spent.
