Hey guys,

I was just curious to know what you all thought about the length of a long-term EC? Do you think 1 year is long term or is 3 years considered long term? More importantly, do you think there is a benefit to engaging in an EC for an x amount of time after what you consider long term? (ex. If you think that doing an EC for 2.5 years is long-term, do you think there is any benefit in continuing that EC any longer or would it be best to move on to something else and work your way up again?)

Depends on what sort of EC it is. If it's volunteering, adcomms like to see commitment so 2 or more years at the same position would look good. If it's something non-clinical, like sports or leadership, then I am guessing the length won't be too important.

Fair enough. I was thinking along the lines of 2 years. However, if I enjoyed the EC and decided to continue it past the 2 years, would that be more beneficial as opposed to starting another EC and doing that for 2 years assuming you like both?

As long as you've got your bases covered (clinical experience, observing physicians, volunteering, +/- research depending on schools of interest), continue on with what you're passionate about.
