I just failed the comlex (step 1) and am looking at taking some more time to study. I would like to take as much time as I need which would put me as graduating after my class. I don't mind. I'm young and don't mind taking the extra time if I will increase my professional skills and will help make passing the boards a more clear shot. If I do take the extra time, I will not graduate with my class. Assuming I graduate a couple months afterwards... how does that affect residency? Is there anyway I could do something productive and educational with the military in the meantime until the next residency cycle?

I am currently in the Army HPSP program.

If you mean that you will drop back a year, you are liable to lose your scholarship. If you will be a couple months late, that happens all the time.

Also, make sure you contact your Army Student Services Coordinator. They are very helpful in laying out your options and giving you the information you need. They have to know about it anyway and it's better to let them know as soon as possible. Getting the Leave of Absence approved takes some time and coordination between them and your school. I took one when a family member was ill and it took about a month to get the paperwork signed and approved.

Ok, excellent. Yah. I talked to the people at my school and they said that I should graduate with everyone else but it is always possible I will graduate a month or so late and that is really what I am concerned with when it comes to starting my residency and everything. Good to know that they have worked with this before 🙂
