So I’ve seen this come up a lot. What does this mean for people who match into these and why do these even exist? I thought residencies were at least 3 years.
Probably talking about prelim years that lead nowhere, like how some IMG's do a prelim year in surgery hoping to match into surgery or match into an advanced year in a different specialty like anesthesiology or radiology, but they aren't able to match.

Prelim Surgery = dead-end. You are overwhelmed with scutwork in a malignant environment - everyone treat you as POS. You have few opportunities to do electives in any other field, and barely have any time left to travel for interviews. Your only viable option is to hope your prelim surg program promote you to categorical - but in reality it rarely happens.

The purpose of these dead-end positions are the following:
1. Scut monkey
2. Extra Medicare $$$ for the system
3. A sense of hope for the resident
With that said, I know of 2 people who did a prelim surgery year without an advanced surgical residency. One of them got picked up by her home institution to go into the specialty she wanted to be in. The other one didn't and settled into general surgery.
And I know one person who's currently stuck in prelim limbo.
