okk..so the first time i learned about osteopathic medicine was from a meeting that i went through my undergraduate medical organization. The osteopathic school that visited my university was DMU and i learned soo much from it that i am thinking to put it as my main theme of my personal statement (about why DO?);because it really did! I also got to know a DO from the same meeting and have shadowed her couple of times too and will also talk about that experience too!! Do u guys think that it will hurt me because i am applying to other DO school too????
Thanks guys for the help!!!🙂

Absolutely not. That is where you were introduced to Osteopathy. You don't owe them anything. It's a good story for your ps in my opinion.

I don't know if you should name drop, honestly. When a local osteopathic college of medicine visited my undergrad... may be better. However, I did reference the only doctor I shadowed by name in my personal statement rough draft. I didn't outright say she was a DO but may in my AACOMAS personal statement.

Almost all the secondaries do ask you why DO. If you're applying to both types of programs like me, then I would try to keep it generic. You can still add different flavors to both applications, but I would keep a common theme.

With a bit more reflection, I don't think it would be too taboo. Most schools don't bat eyes when they ask you were you applied (or they are good at hiding it 😉).

You will have so many opportunities to answer the question, "why D.O.?" Don't use your personal statement to talk about that. Be more unique and "personal."

I agree with this....every secondary will ask the question, Why DO?

You can always mention it in your PS, but, IMO, I would save the bulk of that for the secondary. I think the PS is asking to know about YOU, not just why DO.

Sounds great to me -- good luck!!! 🙂

That's what I would do, as well...simply because I'm slightly over cautious about asserting any potential feelings of obligation to any specific school.

I've actually taken it so far as to be very much vague about everything regarding that angle on even this website...I know for a fact schools check here.

Like Nascar, I concur here. 👍

okk so let me elaborate it more, so basically my meeting was the first exposure to osteopathy and after that i became interested in being a DO. (i will not talk about why DO then) What if my school doesnt have a secondary application essay, like DMU doesnt require to write another essay???
Thanks guys, i appreciate the inputs!

😕 I'm confused. Are you asking what you should do if you are applying to a DO school that does not have essays required for their secondary?

For example, I didn't mention osteopathic medicine in my PS and I got an interview from DMU, which does not have an essay prompt asking "Why DO?" on the secondary. Does that answer your question?

Good Luck :luck:

I think what she's saying is that she would like to address that it is because of the DMU visit to her school that she became interested in osteopathic medicine. Of course it's probably not a good idea to do so on the personal statement or schools might feel she has a bias towards DMU but DMU doesn't have a secondary essay where she could adress it. OP I could be wrong but I thought there was a place on the DMU secondary where you could enter any additional information you felt was important to your application. If there is that's a place you could briefly mention your experience.

Ooooooh, ok, I get it. Yeah, I think the OP should leave the DMU inspired stuff out of their PS and save it for secondaries.

OP, maybe you can talk about how you became inspired to be a DO without mentioning the school? Or just briefly mention it was DMU and move on . . . .
