Hello all,

I am new to this forum and I may be putting this question in the wrong place, but want to give it a shot!

I'm trying to make a tough decision about this coming year in school and wanted to hear some opinions from anybody that has some valuable input.

This fall I will be a Junior at UNCG in the sports-med undergraduate program. Have a 3.65 gpa and looking to become a competitive applicant probably for 2014.

Heres the situation, I recently was hired as an Emergency Medical Scribe at a hospital close by my school and it is the best of what I could hope for as far as a job that earns medical experience and pays well. I work one on one with the doctor as he examines and treats patients. Order, record, and review patient info, etc. However, the shifts are traditional 8, 10, or 12 hour shifts.

I am also on the UNCG cross country and track team that competes year round and also travels to meets on weekends. Our training schedule takes up about 20 hours during the week and more when we travel or practice on weekends.

I'm starting to realize with a pre-med class schedule it might just not be possible to mesh my school schedule, work, and team commitment all together. Right now I am leaning towards keeping my job over my running commitment because of the career and experience opportunities that it offers. Again really looking for some advice and input here; thanks guys. 🙂

Honestly, it sounds like there is no one "right" answer. So much of it comes down to your personal choices and priorities. Personally? I'd drop the running. But I decided not to continue to do any sports post-HS because of the time committment.

What division is UNCG?

Being on a varsity athletic team is a very unique and impressive experience if you are able to maintain high grades and accomplish other volunteer/clinical experience, etc experiences. It also provides a lot of opportunity for leadership opportunity, teamwork, and makes you stand out (not many varsity athletes with otherwise good applications).

The clinical experience you gain from a medical scribe is not bad, but it's not one of the most unique things you can bring to the table. If you really need the money, I guess you don't have much choice. But otherwise I think that while there's plenty that can be gained from holding down a job, it's a lot less unique and, as a scribe, doesn't offer much opportunity to "advance" and show great leadership skills.

Perhaps I'm biased, but I think that if something had to go between work, school, and varsity athletics, I'd chose work without hesitation. The "career opportunities" you gain from being a medical scribe aren't that great and mean little after you enter medical school. You can gain the clinical experience in other, less time-intensive ways.

Samesies. It looks great on an application, but i feel you lose a lot more than you gain. That 3.65 could be a 3.9 without sports.

Tricky question. Do you think you'd get by without being able to run competitively? I know I wouldn't be too happy if I cut exercise out of my regular week, but you could always run on your own. I guess my only caution would be to make sure you're not cutting a great stress-reliever out of your life

I have a few friends who have had great experiences scribing, so I'd probably go with that if you feel that you can only handle one.

Thanks for the replies!

To give some more info about the running program, its a D1 school so we are fairly competitive. However, I wouldnt go so far as to say that it is my area for stress relief. Our coach is super intense and pretty insane just like any other college coach that you would find. I dont see him being supportive or flexible at all with my situation. Just as he wouldnt let my roomate on the team go to church on sunday mornings so that he could be at 7am sunday practice, I doubt he would leave any room for my job.

Through HS, I competed and trained for several triathalons on my own and loved them, I would certainly not have a problem substituting running with a new hobby like our schools club swim team or other opportunities. Hope that clears up a little about the team. Thanks! 😀
