I'm a UK student - and the answer is probably that Karolinska is viewed favourably, purely because it's based in the capital of Sweden (and the Swedes are viewed as being perfect, much like the Swiss, in everything in the UK!)

So long as you speak English fluently enough (which has never been a problem for all the Scandinavian people I've ever met), you shouldn't have any problems in the UK. I can ask around if you like and see what hearsay reports.

The Karolinska Institute is one of the most prestigious European medical universities, and has a great tradition in research in various aspects of medicine. It would compare to Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, etc.
It's not just another decent university, but one that's historically known as a center for medical research and for being on the forefront of medicine.
I believe it's got a few Nobels in medicine, in it's possession also..
you'd have to check up on the exact years of the nobels.
It's reputation in the med world is one of being the flagship of the scandinavian medical universities. hope this helps..

Karolinska is one of the top institutions in the world, not just Europe. I believe that it is extremely difficult to obtain admission to the medical school (I'm not sure if that is your intention), but if so your credentials would be looked upon quite favorably.

Do you need to speak swedish to get into their school? And is their program a 4year and you're required to have finished 4 years of college before? Could you work as a doctor in their country after graduation or not(assuming you have some eu citizenship)? And what do you do if in sweden doctors dont get paid!? How would you buy yourself a house?

Hrmpf! Very insulting!...... But probably true. I guess it would be fair to call Karolinska the best med school in Scandinavia. But you gotta understand that here all med chools are almost the same. We don't have Harvards but we don't have University of Nowheres either. Seriously, your med school is of almost no importance here once you graudate. You Americans won't believe it but it's true.

I believe the program is 6 years and I'm certain that you have to pass a Swedish test. Or, in fact, a similar test in Danish or Norwegian.

About the Nobels..... I wonder about that. I wouldn't be surprised if the number of Swedes getting a prize isn't artificially low - I mean, so the jury won't be accused of favoritism and all.

My heart jumped up when I saw this post !

This university is really one of the best in the world and the quality of its research is incredible. It's personally one of my favorite institutions - just an amazing place.

It is more internationally oriented than say, the Danish universities - which are themselves excellent 🙂

I would compare it more to a place like the Mayo Clinic, or Rockefeller University.

Oh geez, Krevelli, I didn't see that you were in Sweden!

So you're a Swede contemplating going international? I'm a Dane going stateside next year.

I'd like to hear more about your plans.

karolinska has an excellent reputation in the u.s, and i presume in other places. i would agree with kadiyala99 about it being up their with the top institutions in the world. although i don't know about the quality of clinical training, i do know they are well known for medical and public health research. in my public health program in the states, research conducted at karolinska was often mentioned.

Hey BK,

Yeah, I'm Sphveedish alright (although have studied in American schools in Asia and Africa, so English is my mother tongue). I've actually just finished up studying economics, and now I'm applying to Karro for entrance in January. I think I understand your point about how the difference in Scandinavian schools isn't that striking, so that's why I wanted to know what sort of name recognition KI has internationally. It can make all the difference especially if one is planning on working in other countries (developing countries and/or an English-speaking country would be ideal). What are your plans? Where did you/do you study medicine?

Ps. Feel terrible about what's been going on in Sweden the last few days... Are you in Stockholm? That 16-year old girl who was murdered, then Anna Lindh and then the little girl. The world is NUTS. We were planning on going past NK later on tonight - makes you think that even with 30 of Sweden's best doctors helping her, she still didn't make it. Depraved madman.

I hear you about the world going crazy. Even in good old, safe Scandinavia does this happen now. It's just plain horrible what happened.

About me...... I'm a med student at university of Copenhagen and I'll be going for a US residency in 2005. I think I understand your original question better now and I'll be honest and tell you that I would probably prefer to put Karolinska as my school of graduation over University of Copenhagen. It's just better known abroad.

these guys put out an incredible amount of bench research work, and have done so, for quite a few years. If i recall, theyre huge, in Cardiology, with a bunch of studies... Isnt this the place that came out with the SSS study? (SSS- scandinavian simvastatin study) This study, done in the late 80's, revolutionized the treatment of patients with high lipids/cholesterol, and has totally changed the picture of cardiac care.

Hi Krevelli,

I'm not Swedish, but I just know alot about their research. I also like the Scandy countries and have had Danish and Icelandic friends (and Norwegian, Swedish ... 🙂 ).

this is a nice place, if you can put up with living in the arctic.. just kidding scandies. This is a truly cool place...
