What do you think about leaving interview early to go to preinterview dinner?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would not leave an interview early just to make it to a preinterview dinner. I don't think missing a preinterview dinner would hurt you chances at that program, but leaving early from an interview might.

Leaving an interview day early sends a negative message to a program IMHO.

Agree. However if a place is one of your top choices I think it's also pretty important to be at that pre- interview dinner. I know plenty of places where hitting it off with the residents at the dinner will get you ranked higher than you otherwise might.

I have 2 interviews back to back. In order to make it to the dinner for program B, I have to leave program A early. Better to stay the whole time at program A and miss the preinterview dinner at program B, or leave the program A early and make it to the preinterview dinner for program B?

i would not leave early, unless there was some sort of change or something that they did not notify you of before and you had already booked your flight.

if they did that, then that's another story. i had that happen at stanford, i was pissed. i missed my flight.

otherwise stay the whole time!

Are you leaving the "windup" festivites early? Or are you actually missing an interview time? windup is one thing, and we accomodate people all the time, we understand that flights don't wait. However, if you want to skip out before we are done interviewing, that is a problem.

Bad idea. It is much worse to leave an interview early than to arrive late at or be absent from a pre-interview dinner. You can at least let the residents at the other program whether you will be late for or even be able to make the pre-interview dinner, and usually they'll be pretty accommodating. But to depart an interview early just to attend a pre-interview dinner at another program is pretty crass.

Yeah, I think skipping out on some of the wrapup events to catch flights is excusable.
