Hi to everyone, I´m really new around and I´ve just decide to move....I´m moving to the USA this year (nov-dec) with a permanent resident status. My plan is to start working as a dental assistant to get familiar with the system, right after that start applying to an AEGD program and at the same time looking for federal loans to apply to a IDP or Advanced Standing programs, btw I still don´t know the difference between them.
Anyway... the last option...and I know it´s really hard to get in...would be to apply to a specialty program I think I do not loose that much by trying...

Honestly, what do you think folks... advices based on personal experiences are highly appreciate it...

Thank you!

Woooooooooooooow! 76 visits and not even a single comment... what a dissapointment..... :S

i am not sure about job prospects for dental assistant. also, you have to do a separate course for that.
overal looks a good plan🙂 good luck

If your plan is work as a dental assistant....i suggest do some dental assistant in your home country... why? Because it is not easy to work from the other side of the dental chair.... looks so easy but isn't it..... watch some videos about dental assisting in USA you can see them in YouTube.... the work is VERY fast

Yes, in some states like California you have to be a Registered Dental Assistant, but in some other states like Kansas you can be a dental assistant without formal education. Thanks for your words! good luck to you too. 😀

thanks for the advice, I´ll start preparing myself. 😀

I did not comment, because your plans are very optimistic and I did not want to discourage you.
Working as a dental assistant is very difficult, especially psychologically. You need to be fast, pleasant, speak and understand English very well. No one is going to take time and get you familiar with the system.
Although there are a lot of nice people, it is a reality, that international dentists are taken advantage of very often and treated poorly by their employers, to say mildly. Be prepared to be underpaid, yelled at, thrown instruments, poked on purpose etc
My advise will be to get all the references, contact numbers and other documents ready. Also make sure you have a good friend or family member, who will be getting paperwork done for you while you are in the states.
Try and prepare yourself for all the exams, like NBDE 1 and 2 while still at home. It will be very difficult to have your head in the right state of mind to prepare for the exams in the new country and work at the same time
Good luck

Tell us more about you.... If you want to hear advice , you should share more about you...
What state are you planning to live? Do you have options or only one?
What is your level TOEFL?
How many languages do you speak?
Do you know dentist in America?

Oralcare123 is sincere, I suffered terrible things as a dental assistant... I felt like I was working next to savages animals ....or in the jungle.

Feel sorry and bad about this, I hope you are nice to assistants. But not all dentists are that Bad.

Fr VM325xi (feels like talking to a BMW) plan is good. Start with volunteer assisting/observing so you don't feel too pressured and get to understand the system and get some experience how things go and then apply in a formal way to be paid assistant.( most likely with some exp under your belt you won't be in any trouble)

Thanks for the comments, I´m aware that I´m being really optimistic and that not everything might work as I´m expecting. I´m planning to get to there in December and already making some arrangements-contacts and paperwork.
I´ll take your advice and start reading for NBDE part 1, thanks again!

I´m planning to live in Kansas and Yes, I know a Dentist there who offered me a job as a dental assistant and it seems it will not be as bad as it sounds. I only speak 2 languages spanish-english. I haven´t made the TOEFL yet, still practicing cause I want to score high 😀 .. I´m sorry about you suffered as a dental assistant, I´ll prepare mentally to a savage environment.
