What do you think of jobs in medicine like radiology or pathology that dont really help patients directly ? In some countries those jobs are done by people other than doctors ? Would you go to med school just to get a high paying job like radiology ? or pathology ?

Can you believe they both get paid 200-300K a year to wor 40-50 hours a week ? I guess it is good to be a member of the MD 'union'.

Histo sucks! so no path for me

Rads...that's not a bad gig....

don't get to work with patients as much, definitely not in pathology and in radiology you see the patient once pretty much...not what i'd want to do

I've actually had really great experiences with pathologists when I was on medicine. It seemed to be very intellectually stimulating and challenging... just not my cup of tea. You need to understand the disease very well to make the ultimate diagnosis so I think medical education there is appropriate. Same applies to radiology, although their diagnoses tend to be more vague and they miss things with worrisome frequency.

I was able to work as a histotech/path assistant for 4 years. The negative aspect of not working with patients is a better fit for some physicians...some are just not people people! I loved the art and subtle differences in normal vs. diseases tissues. It takes medicine into the realm of pure science and away from the subjectivities of symptoms. We used to joke that our patients never complained about the food.

Along the same theme, my girlfriend is a pediatric radiologist. She went to med school in D.C. and became totally burned out by the inner-city. After seeing pregnant 12 year olds and 75 year olds with tertiary syphylis, she wanted to pursue a "cleaner" type of medicine. Strangely ironic, since she does at least one barium enema per shift.

Hey, my dad's a pathologist and I think that it's a really interesting area to work in. Do you know in which countries those jobs are done by non-doctors (I'm just curious)? I would never go to med school just to get a high paying job!!!!!!!!!!

Don't help patients directly? Says who? I think that diagnosing that cervical fracture or being able to say that mass is not cancerous helps them pretty directly.

There are some radiologists (i.e. interventional radiology) who are more like surgeons than traditional radiogists. They do angiograms/place stents/etc. with the assistance of imaging devices. I never realized how interesting this specialty was until I saw some of the procedures first hand, but now I am definitely thinking about heading in that direction.

Radiology and Pathology are both highly respected medical professions. Being a medical doctor does not mean extreme amounts of patient contact, and I am sure that there are many people who went to medical school to practice both specialties. You remind me of a troll called milwaukeemike who was recently suspended/banned from SDN.

I on the other hand have nothing but time.

I remember when I was shadowing at Yale-New Haven Hospital, there was this radiologist sitting in his chair, looking at the screen in front of him, and just bragging about how much he knows compared to this ER doctor who was on his feet for about 7 hours and was all over the places.

That was funny.

Thats exactly the difference in the fields. EM requires running around constantly and a broad base of knowledge used to treat all types of patients. Radiology requires great depth of knowledge in one field used to analyze/diagnose from data provided. The beauty of medicine is that there is such a variety of roles to choose from.

oh yeah, also if you don't think radiology or path helps patients directly then you don't know much about these fields.
