I'am an IMG plannig to make an Anesthesiology or IM residency next year... I'm watching scutwork.com so I can make my mind of what programs apply to, but I keep reading posts on this forum of people who don't like the references and evaluations on that site. Somebody tell me, please, why the reviews on that page are good/bad? Had the post help anybody to choose residency? If it's so bad, can somebody tell where can I find some info and reviews I could trust to, so I can make an informed choice?

Thank you all ;-)

Scutwork has been a partner site of SDN.

The major problem users have with the site is that it is not updated and we have been unable to reach the owners of the site to request/require that they do so.

In addition, because there is no verification (as is the case with most review sites), there have been some who claim that the positive posts about programs are written by faculty members or others with something to gain.

However, you might also consider using the SDN Residency Interview feedback site for information: http://more.studentdoctor.net/residency.php

I have heard that negative reviews do not get posted and the reason being is that the site is under pressure from programs not to post those negative reviews. If true, it makes the information that actually makes the board quite worthless.

I know for certain that I read a review of a program that was negative and then many months later when I read the review again it had been modified and was no longer as negative. It would be interesting to know what their policy is on modifying and editing reviews that have already been posted. Can they be modified by the original poster or by site moderators or both?

I did an honest review of my program 3 times and it never showed up on the site. What use is it if they filter the results?

It's a shame to hear that! I think I've read a negative review from Mayo Rochester IM program a few weeks ago from a recent graduate and he gave 3/5... today as I'm reading what you've writen above I was looking for it to be sure, and it's gone. I think you are right pals...

But still, besides scutwork.com and the link posted above do you know of any other source of information which is not biased toward programs and that I can use to decide which programs apply to? I'm an IMG and I know it won't be easy for my to land my dream residency, so I'm willing to take whatever comes to me, BUT I'd like to know what I'm applying to: I'm not going to sell myself cheap so easely, so to speak!!! LOL

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of good resources out there. Word of mouth is usually best. If you're an IMG, then you should have some US facuty who can guide you. If an FMG, then its difficult at best, as most of your faculty will have no idea about US programs.

I caution you however about "sell(ing your)self cheap so easely (sic)"; while you don't have to take any offer that comes your way, you should know that the doors are closing for IMG/FMGs and you may not be able to afford to be picky.

Check out valuemd.com and search in the specialty relevant forums here for some non-biased advice. SDN does not edit or modify posts regarding programs except in the case of TOS violations.

How is that doors are closing for IMG/FMG? I've seen that almost half of family medicine and IM are img/fmg residents and about 25 percent of admited to anesthesia are img/FMG.

A lot of US med schools increased the number of students that they admitted - those people will need residencies and (biases being what they are) will most likely get first pick at the residencies, both in the regular Match and in the scramble. A few new medical schools opened up, also, in places like Pennsylvania and Florida.

As the number of US medical grads increases, it will decrease the number of slots available for IMGs and FMGs, and make it harder for them to match. That's the current thinking, anyway.
