One of my teachers told me that and actually wrote it down in my yearbook, despite having an A in the class. What does this mean to care less about the grade and more about material, he said it will come to use later in my life???

Think about it. You really should be able to get it by yourself.

It means that the goal of learning isn't just the grade you get at the end of the class, its a mastery and appreciation for the material. It is very possible to master the material without scoring in the A range of an exam, and at the same time it is also very possible to score an A without mastering the material. The further along you get in your education the more obvious this truth becomes. It really wasn't until medical school that I was able to appreciate this fully.

Means exactly what it sounds like. You don't have to worry about getting an A to get an A when you're more interested in knowing your stuff and get an A as a side effect of that.

It means to immerse yourself in whatever you are learning. Not because you want the grade, but because you genuinely want to learn and better yourself.

It's also why many teachers hate the overemphasis on standardized testing, which forces them to "teach to the test" and condition students to care more about grades than learning. Study for the education, not just for the degree. And don't learn short-term (forgetting the material immediately after a test).

Because it is possible to spend 3 hours cramming little bits of data to answer all the questions on the test but not really get the general point. In medical school and life it is normally better to grasp an retain the general point than to try to retain minute information as it is much easier to lose.
That being said in college you should worry about both getting an A and understanding the material well enough so that you can relearn it with ease, so again try to get the general point and principle and then build up with extra tiny facts.
