Received a reply to my "I intend to rank you very highly" to a program director, he said blah blah, great meeting you, you have a great record, you should do very well in residency, but he didnt mention how he is going to rank me, or that I would do well in his program specifically. Is he blowing me off or am I being completely paranoid?

The wait is driving me insane.....🙁

he can't tell how he's gonna rank you cos that will be a match violation. He is obviously playing by the rules so just sit tight, fretting obviously will not make him rank you higher...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that PDs can say whatever they want about where they will rank an applicant (including lies). The rule is simply that they can't ask the applicant to disclose where he/she will rank the program. Despite this fact, 80% of my interviewers have obviously tried to discern this information . . . . .

Yes, a PD could tell you where you will be ranked. However, just because he didn't, doesn't mean you've been ranked dead last. Perhaps their policy is just they don't tell anyone. Perhaps they're not done ranking people yet. Perhaps they really liked you and ranked you "highly" (though not high enough to be promised a spot) so they don't know if you'll match there until the match actually happens.
In any case, I would try not to worry too much about it. There is just no way to know why he said what he did. Best of luck! :luck:

I'm pretty sure that there is a rule that stipulates that a PD can't tell you where he/she intends to rank you. There is no rule that states that you can't tell the program where you plan to rank them though. And PD's are all aware that every year they have applicants who say that their program is their no. 1 program and who they rank highly but don't match because the applicant ranked another program no. 1.

From the NRMP site:

Misleading Communications

The Match Participation Agreement permits program directors and applicants to express a high degree of interest in each other but prohibits statements implying a commitment. However, some applicants may misinterpret statements of encouragement to signify a commitment on the part of the program and some programs may make misleading statements.

Statements such as the following have been made by program directors to applicants who later did not match to those programs:"

"We plan to rank you very high on our list."
"We hope to have the opportunity to work with you in the coming year."
Such statements are not binding and frequently are misinterpreted, and applicants should not rely on them when creating their rank order lists.
