Question, what drives you guys to become a doctor. Lets face it it's a long road for most of us but for the most part we stick with it. So what's that "glue" that keeps you on track?

too busy playing world of warcraft to think about changing professions.

Lots of this each year.

idk what drives me, I just love it. I've always loved it. Every since I was like 3 years old this is what I've wanted to do. I don't have an explanation for why, I just love it

I want to be better than you. I mean that in general. If I am not the best in whatever I do, I work until I am. I don't like being the first amongst the losers. At whatever I do, I want nothing short of absolute perfection. When I am finished, people need to bow down to my greatness.

Money is not really important, I'm a workaholic anyway, I don't spend money.

I need a long, meaningful journey to distract me from the illusion that is life.

Because when I imagine the future, I can't imagine doing anything else.

I've had a few surgeries as a child and the physicians were always comforting and it just seemed like the most noble profession anyone can go into.

Although I gave up on pursuing medicine because I thought I wasn't smart (bad self esteem, but not anymore) halfway through college i realized what I wanted.

oh and one of these, but that will be much later:

Can't believe people are into all that. I'd rather live in a closet in Manhattan than a palace in Idaho to be honest.

yeah can't believe people would rather live in a palace than a closet!

I don't know and I'm too confused to consider anything else.

Why would you want to live in Manhattan? Why would you choose the location in America with the highest cost of living and the highest population density?

I don't see what's wrong with California either. It feels comfortable here. I have no complaints.

not to mention Manhattan traffic, air quality,...

Texas and Idaho are the same as far as I'm concerned. I second the closet over the suburban McMansion lifestyle, but to each their own.

I'm driven by the fact that ~51% of the population gets poor, biased health care. More so, when split up by race. I'm also set out to prove that you can have both brains and beauty 😉.

...And so on. Repeat with Minnesota, parts of Wisconsin, most of the Northeast, Western Canada, etcetera.

California is hell. If it had a face, I would punch it.

To be fair, there are beautiful parts of California. AND there are ugly parts of Washington.

That house in in Dallas, Texas.

There are two cities in this world: New York and London. The rest are villages with various attractions.

Love the life. I like being able to walk down at 2AM on a Thursday night and have places to go. I love to be able to walk or take the cab around instead of driving. I love the endless possibilities, the opportunities, and yes, the massive population densities that a city like New York has.

is nobody here motivated by the good feeling you get when you do good things for the world? Damn 🙁

Hey now... Idaho is pretty. 😛

In any event, I live in Montana and I wish it wasn't so expensive. Average home price in my town is over $500,000 despite the fact that salaries are awful. I commute into a larger town where the average home price is over $300,000. You pay a pretty penny to live in the more scenic areas of the Rockies.

One major difference between NYC and the mountain west:

I can drive 3.5 hours and be in Washington DC
3.5 Hours to Boston (college town USA)
1.5 Hours to Philadelphia (I was there visiting friends at Jefferson & Penn this weekend)
1 Hour to the Jersey Shore, 2.5 Hours to the Hamptons (beaches 😀 )
6 Hours to Montreal (the nightlife is amazing)

You could live 8 hours away from the next major metropolitan area out in the west, the distances are enormous. I love driving and I love visiting my friends! It's great to be centrally located in good ol New York

or you can be in Los Angeles, and have the best weather around! wear a tshirt all year around, go snowboarding and then drive an hour to the beach, and maybe stop by hollywood for some clubing! or find anything you would ever want within a 50 mile radius, ......

Yeah that's the one huge disadvantage to living out here, IMO. I live in the SW corner of Montana and the closest metro area is a good 6-7 hours south of here. It drives me nuts sometimes.

LA is too spread out, it's not a walking city. It's not as fun, not for me at least.

Was out sick for a week in high school and was brainwashed by a M*A*S*H marathon.

No. No fairness. I have seen almost every part of Can'taffordya and it only gets mildly less hideous as you approach the Oregon border.

grew up in WA state, lived in socal for 4 years. Most of cali sucks but there are plenty of scenic places, especially along the coast. More important than that though, it's always so gray in WA. growing up i never thought the rain and gray skies bothered me, but now, having lived in cali, living in the PNW really puts me into a funk. it's soo nice to live in the sun, more than i ever admitted to myself growing up in WA

👍

and in the future, we're gonna have a train straight to SF.

New York is the greatest city in the world. LA is a sewer. you guys think you can win this one on air quality? 🤣🤣🤣

Not exclusively, unless we're identifying someone who is going to burn out when faced with non-compliant patients with life-threatening chronic conditions, and mountains of paperwork.

Life isn't a Hallmark card. Wanting to go into it solely because you want the warm feeling that comes from healing lepers with a smile and violently expelling rainbows from every orifice isn't going to last.

Going from California to Washiongton, I feel the same way. The first chance I get (i.e., med school, residency) I am OUT of here! I love the rain, but 300 days of it is no fun. Raining on 4th of July (5 out of the 6 years I've been here) is no fun. The predicted forecast this week (fog and rain) is no fun.

Wordz. Why harp on Idaho? A palace there would be waaay batter than a closet in manhattan. Now, if you were to start talking about a palace in north Dakota.......

The worst place in the states is browning Montana.... Anyone who thinks Idaho is bad should be sentenced to a day in browning.

hahaha speaking off topically about the worst place to live in has to be central canada (I'm there). Absolute garbage, all flat land most of it is for farming (not my city). It is redic. I always wanted to move to LA or NYC actually, Florida sounds pretty sweet too 🙂.

You've been dying to say that to someone, haven't you?

Browning, Shelby, and Cut Bank Montana are all comparable to central Canada... but what do I know... I have never been east of Lethbrige (in Canada that is).

IMHO, Browning is the worst, not only because there is absolutely NOTHING there (no srsly.... look at google earth), there is no farming, some grazing, and stinky icky pools of sulfur(+natural gas?) water. There aren't any trees, everyone lives in a trailer... eminem should shoot a music vid there.

I'm aware that you can't base a whole career on that, but basing it on just money isn't going to help much either. Can you imagine waking up every day to a job you hate, and doing 12+ hour shifts? Yikes

knowing later on that my knowledge and skills can be put into good use and help patients become better 😀
