I'm an MSIII with no idea what to do other than having ruled out surgery. What are the best, most broadly applicable elective rotations to do as a 4th year? Thanks!

1. Emergency medicine
2. Any ICU rotation (MICU/SICU/PICU/NICU)
3. International electives if you're at all interested or if you speak another language
4. Subspecialty electives in either medicine or peds if you're leaning toward either (nephrology tends to be particularly good learning, and applicable to many specialities)

Others:
Anesthesia
Derm
Sports med
Radiology
:luck:

Are you signing up for your fourth year classes already? If not, I'm sure you will have a better idea of what you want to do once you're further through 3rd year. At my school it's really easy to switch stuff around. The only difficult courses to change being the required classes (because they are so full you can't change them around once you have them). In fact, we can switch classes up to the day it starts if you have a compelling reason (like you just ruled out all your other career options and think this might be the one). Unless you're on a very different schedule, you probably don't need to worry about this quite yet.

[color] im in the same boat you are. people have told me similar things that KidDr is recommending- radiology, anesthesia, ICU, but i think the medicine subspecialties are always helpful- things like cardiology, endocrine, and infectious diseases, topics that are applicable in many fields.

at my school, we do have to worry about rotations sooner rather than later- you have to set them up early, and they're practically set in stone . . . plus we have electives and selectives in third year-- im doing radiology for my first elective next month . . .

raspberry... don't feel bad. we don't get to do any electives until most of the required rotations are done (so not until 4th year). i guess it is good in that you may have more of a sense of what you want to do (or what you have already ruled out), but you only have time for 1 or 2 electives before it's time to do residency apps! pros and cons to both i guess....

ICU
IMed subspecialties - if you dont like Surgery, skip GI, but Nephro and Cardio are always good

Also try to get a 2wk elective in Optho...I cant tell you how much you will be able to do if you are really good at eye exams...medicine will love you, cardiology will love you, nephro, rheum...you will get lots of compliments with a good fundus exam

Good call with the ophtho. Since most med schools stack their electives in MS4, i recommend that you look into the programs that are early match just so that you don't find yourself loving Ophtho or neuro/neurosurg during your 3rd or 4th month of fourth year.
