hey guys. I was just wondering what you were thinking about before deciding to go into this great field. What other residencies struck your fancy and why did they pale in comparison to ophtho?

On another note:

For those of you further along in your careers, any regrets (not nec just the job market stuff- how about the day to day satisfaction/interest level)? What kind of mix (research, clinic, surgery, business) do you have in your career/week? How many hours do you work? How does being an attending compare to being a resident (hours, interest level, balance of life with career)?

ENT was my #2 but I enjoyed the microsurgical aspects more than the neck dissections, pec flaps, etc. Didn't have a #3 in med school but now that I'm in internship looking back it would have been radiology. Ophtho was the clear winner for me.

This is so true; radiology is looking mighty good during internship

I thought that urology and ENT were great fields and together with ophthalmology formed the best 2 months of my 3rd year of medical school.

urology was my #2....lots of nice, quick endoscopic procedures with the occasional big whack. in the end, the ability to have weekends off carried the day. weekends off = feeling like a normal dude with a life outside of medicine.

I'm not trying to be a Jacka$$, but what do you now like about radiology. I understand its a pretty nice lifestyle (time and money), but are there other things that you have noticed about the field that are appealing?

Radiology keeps you involved in all the organ systems and there are a lot of procedures, even without interventional fellowship, more so than I realized in med school. Maybe I'm biased because most of my transitional classmates are future radiologists. Sitting around the reading room still gets boring though. I would definitely choose ophtho if I had to do it again.

vascular surgery.

Gen surg with a fellowship in CT. that being said, as the intern year comes to a close, ophtho couldn't have been a better choice.
