Is it just another name for Step 1 2 and 3 or is there something else I'm missing?
that's what it is.
Anyone know the reason they are called "boards"? I assume part of it is that it makes for catchy book titles -- ie it rhymes with wards. Nothing really rhymes with USMLE. Plus on the pre-allo board, it was pointed out that USMLE isn't particularly scary as it has "smile" in the name.
Medicine traces it's routes to the Far East where doctors were expected to not only treat patients but have wicked kung fu skills. So their final exam included a big "boards" breaking session, and the name stuck.

boards makes a little sense . . . but what the hell is a Bar exam? i mean, seriously, they had to expect a million puns from that title . . .

AFAIK, those boars that your dean mentioned are Boards for specialists (and for those who are about finishing residency/fellowship); like "boards (exam) for internal medicine" etc.We were told by the clinical dean (or something like that) that it is incorrect to call these boards... and that only licensed physicians take board exams to be board certified 😱
