What happens after med school??

As u figured from my title, i am a newb when it comes to residency. I was wondering how many years of residency after med school in say... radiologist or oncologist??

Radiologist = 5 years (1 year internship + 4 yrs speciality training)

Medical Oncologist = 6 years (3 years Internal Medicine + 3 years of Heme/Onc fellowship)

Different fields have different reqs. ER is 3 or 4 yrs all in ER. General Surg is 5 yrs of G Surg.. Every field is different. If you really want to learn about all the different fields read "Iserson's Guide to getting into a residency" he talks about the length of almost every imaginable path.

ER is 3 or 4 yrs all in ER.

Come on, man, you know this is wrong. For 4 year EM programs, about 3/5s are 1-4, and 2/5s are 2,3,4 (meaning there's a non-EM intern year there or elsewhere).

Even so, about 3/4 of EM programs are 1-3 anyways, making the 4 years moot.

I'm always a little bit shocked when med students don't know this stuff. I knew all about this when I was a freshman in undergrad. Maybe I'm just obsessed. 😛
