What happens if a program closes. Are you really screwed or can they help you get another position

usually the surrounding programs try to take up the residents. I think the PD would try and help his/her residents out, but yeah, you could be left in a lurch.

you're screwed. sometimes other programs will take residents but there are no guarantees. so stay away from unstable programs.

I second that. If the program isn't rock solid, don't risk it. My best friend was given 2 days notice only 2 months into his program that the hospital was shutting down (ancient osteopathic dinosaur community hosp). He basically called all over the US trying to find a place, and was offered NJ, OH, and IN. He chose IU, and he isn't happy there.

How can you truly know if a program is solid/stable or not? Does ACGME give warnings for things to be changed before they would ever pull a program's accreditation? Is there somewhere to look for shakey programs? Thanks.

on the ACGME site, you can check a programs accreditation status. However, the best thing is to keep your ears open---programs that people think are shaky will come up in conversation.
