What has been your favorite course in undergrad?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I didn't really like the instructor all that much but the Coastal bio itself was great. For most of it, we had lectures and then dissections for the lab portion. After the semester ended, the class went on a week long field trip to the coast to get some hands on experience. We went to beaches, marshes, and swamps, and all of it was extremely rewarding.

CVA is comparative vertabrate anatomy. The teacher at my school is great and makes the class incredibly fun. That and I really like comparing organisms to see what's different. Our labs have been mostly dissection, but we also did a bone lab to see if we could identify the vertabrates they came from.😀

We had a very similar vert. anatomy lecture/lab at my school that was really HARD but pretty cool because of all of the dissections and differentiations, etc. My favorite class however was Physiology of Reproduction and Lactation. This class was so interesting, not only in the material presented but all of the hands on stuff we did. We dissected reproductive organs from cows, pigs and sheep, collected semen using various methods, performed pregnancy palpations and so on. This class was hard but overall it was awesome!

Magical Mushrooms and Mischievous Molds!

(yes the exclamation point is part of the title)

mammalian physiology lab....got to measure the contractions of a rat's heart

and abnormal psychology

I have this book! Did you go to Cornell? I'd love to go to vet school at Cornell just to have an excuse to drop by his office. he sounds wonderfully insane.

well it was a tie between 2 classes..

first was food process engineering... it was basically home ec for engineers (i was a biomedical engineer) we got to cook for homework and did stuff like measure the viscosity of ketchup 🙂

second was small animal surgery... it was terminal surgeries on rats and we got to do everything from spay/neuters to nephrectomies, splenectomies, etc... it was really a great class... it was geared towards biomed engineers that were planning on going into research...

Horse training! For lab (which met every weekday) we got an unstarted 2 year old and spent the semester green breaking it

As far as more academic classes go...I'm enjoying microbiology (my class is meant for premed/prevet students). It's fairly interesting learning about various diseases and the microbes that cause them

Transmission Electron Microscopy!

I LOVED the class, but oh, the work in prepping specimens!!

yes I'm going to CU right now...will graduate in may. George Hudler IS the most wonderfully insane person I've ever met, and his lectures are HILARIOUS! Last Thursday was Hallucinogenic Mushrooms where we learned exactly how to identify them, and how to avoid getting arrested if you're in possession of the of sacred shrooms.

Favorite Classes: Organic (lecture), World History I & II

Least Favorite: Physics I & II

Ornithology was def. one of my favorite classes. Taught by one of my all time favorite professors. And bird-watching was fun too! Wow, I feel like a geek.

I also loved microbiology. Hilarious professor. Used goofy enough examples that were memorable when it came time for the exam.

I hated physics, I probably could have enjoyed it a smidge more if my school had a half decent physics department. Lab was painful.

wildlife research techniques - learned/performed lots of trapping and sampling techniques, had to memorize by sight and sound 50+ birds and by sight 30+ plants.

least favorite was physics too! anyone who claims science classes are easier at state schools should come to university of washington - would set them straight forever...

my least favorite is by far physics, how does learning about electricity and conductivity help in vet med??

Well since there were 3 significant phases in my undergrad education, I'll list 3 - US since 1945 (hard but awesome!), Politics of Island Asia (fanscinating, especially in the post-9/11 world), and Cell Bio/Biochem (the first pre-req I actually found interesting and applicable to vet med).

Unlike most pre-vets, I actually found physics sort of interesting and enlightening.

My two favorites were Marine Mammal Bioacoustics and Acoustic Animal Behavior, all about exactly how animals make their sounds and why they make them. And I'll admit it I really enjoyed organic as well-lecture not lab!

how does learning about electricity and conductivity help in vet med??

in cardiology!

my favorite courses in undergrad were "Human Bonding", Biological Anthropology and Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy and Phys.

we also will have to revisit physics in physiology of the respiratory system (i still hate it, though!)

true, but resp phys wasn't nearly as intense as cardiovascular, we actually used <gasp> vectors!! haha

And radiology!

and two-dimentional kinematics for evaluating lameneses!

my favorite undergrad course was probably first semester physics. mostly cause of the prof and classmates. i do love vectors, though!

Yeah, unpredictably my fav classes were Physics, Chemistry, and Genetics - all because of the profs.

My physics teacher was awesome, he was young, had long black hair past his scapulas, 6 piercings in both ears, wore all black, was the dept head and said that one of the reasons physics is cool because is because it explains the math involved in throwing stuff at people lol. He explained things in a way I could understand. I took that guy for both physics, and trig and calculus. He also wrote my LOR, and I'm inviting him to my wedding this summer 🙂

My Genetics prof told stories alllll the time and he told us that the guy who named the F-factor was a total lech and sleeze, and that F-factor itself stood for "F_ck- factor." From then on, I could always remember what exactly the F-factor did!

My Chemistry prof told stories every class about him playing chemistry pranks, like one time dropping 10 lbs of sodium off one of the Ohio State campus bridges into the river and immediately observing a whoosh of 30 ft flames into the air, then running from the campus police. It helped me to understand that Na is strongly cationic and loves to react!

My favorites:

Comparative Vertebrate Morphology
Arabic
Statics (physics-ish, hilarious teacher)
Modern Physics (Quantum, Atomic, Lasers, all the cool stuff)
Automatic Process Control (sorta like diagnosing a process instead of an animal)
Fluid Mechanics (actually heard from a med school student that they needed this too!)

Least Favorite:

Chem. Engr. Computer Methods - UGH! not to mention that my 2 week project got corrupted on my flash drive 4 hours before it was due and my teacher just told me to "work like hell"

Virology - awesome teacher, and I loved that a lot of it was animal oriented, so I learned about canine distemper, equine herpes, avian influenza, etc.

Vertebrate Physiology - once more, very animal oriented, very difficult to however, and I enjoyed the challenge! hated the labs though....

Physics - I know, I'm a freak, but what can i say, who doesn't like playing with pendulums after a 2.5 hour Biochem lab?

Favorites:
Organic Chem.- prof was awesome!
Endocrinology - very challenging, but really interesting topics
Neurobiology - just plain like the topic

Least Favorites:
Inorganic Chem. - really boring class, should have listened to friends and classmates that took it before me! 😴
Cell bio. - still trying to figure out what aliens have to do with cell bio! 😕

Favorites:
Australian Wildlife Biology-took it in Australia, they have such cool animals!
Genetics-the professor had test problems about Harry Potter and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, always fun!
Physics-it helps to have a really crazy professor

Least Favorites
Health Care at any Cost?-thought it was going to be really interesting, but biggest waste of time ever!

I feel like such a bad pre-vet...I didn't like most of my sciences so far, but that mostly depended on the professor. I sort of liked molecular and cell bio--the professor really knew his stuff, made sure we knew it, and it was where I finally realized how much isn't known yet. Then again, the professor was also a pompous bastard who gaves tests that made you want to kill yourself.
Ecology Field lab is totally awesome, though--field trips to parks to identify plants and animals--how could I not love that??
And the most random one of all--Expressive Cultures: Sounds. It's one of the general requirements of my school, but the professor was absolutely amazing.

Microbiology: I adore the professor and adore the field. I'll be working in her lab - hooray!

Vaccines and Cellular Immunology:the material was AMAZING, the prof was great, but the class as a whole sucked... I took it at a different school than mine, and they admirably tried to make it student-led, but everyone made superficial powerpoints and read them word for word. yuck. however, the class inspired me to do a bunch of exciting outside reading.

sexuality and society in modern europe - very interesting and fun!
The modern epic (literatrure class in War and Peace, 100 yrs of solitude, and Ulysses) - powerful!
Latin 11 - Catullus is hilarious!

organic chem and latin american lit/border culture were my two favorites. ooh, and environmental toxicology-- what a kicker of a class.

Hands down my favorite classes were ornithology, mammalogy (yay for metatherians and eutherians), and conservation biology. My random non-science favorite class was Theatre and Film of the Holocaust (a very depressing, yet insightful and well-taught class).

Least favorite would have to be o-chem. I did fine in the class, but sorry I just don't really flipping care about the damn chair conformations...

dairy management--enjoyed palpating, analyzing rations, scoring conformations and other practical stuff; I also got to go to the Wisconsin Dairy Expo. There were only three in the class and the teacher was the school herdsman so it was a very informal and fun group.

microbiology--I didn't actually get to attend this class (taped the lectures) but my lab section was (again) only three people and we were uproariously silly (largely due to the fact that one kid was a highschooler...) Studying the diseases was cool although human-oriented. And the teacher was just plain grandfatherly🙂 👍

O-chem was cool subject-matter wise and the labs were exciting too. I love the NMR😎 It makes everything so much easier.

Edit: I really hated cell-molec. It was disorganized, the labs were near-pointless abuses of frogs AND disorganized, the teachers consistently contradicted themselves when questioned, and the labs were vague essay questions that were scored harshly 🙁 they didn't even use the ($100+ dollar) textbook 🙁 🙁 🙁

Some of your classes sound awesome...I wish I could have taken horse training in college!

My favorite course was called "Navigating with the Stars" or something like that. We learned how to use the sky to figure out how to find our way around. Totally useless but made me feel like an explorer from a few hundred years ago 😉

Postbacc: Behavioral Ecology. Took it just for fun, and boy was it ever!

Undergrad: The Gospel of John, Jesus as the Christ, Contemporary Moral Issues, Social Problems...I had lots of cool classes in undergrad, now that I think about it.

Undergrad: Special Topics elective course in Forensic Anthropology. (I wonder if I still have my notebook of bone drawings!?) Also, another Anthro special topics course offered: Native Plants and Poisons: Ethnobotany. Very cool stuff. I was an English major after chickening out of science back then, but I couldn't deny that I was turned onto Anthro.

Post-Bacc (aka non-degree-non-matriculated-part-time you-get-to-register-after-mud status): Microbiology [lab rocked!] and my retake of BioChem.

Hmm, plenty of good stuff...but I am really loving Horse Training! Gen Vet Sci Diseases was great too---partly because the professor is prone to entertaining stories 🙂

Favorites:
Comparative Vertebrate Morphology
Organ Physiology
Psychology of Learning
Sensation and Perception
Research Methods (Got to do research studying rat sex)
Behavioral Neurology

Hated:
Gen Chem (I like O chem though)
Physics - I'm finishing the second semester now and it's pure torture.

Wow, you all have such interesting sounding courses. I went to a very small school so selections were somewhat limited, but I still had some great ones!!

My favorites were Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, General and Molecular Physiology, A Trip through the Middle Ages (in Germany), and Environmental perspective of Ecuadorian rainforest and the Galapagos Islands( yep we got to go to both places, incredible!!!)

Least favorite: Definitely physics, I like the idea of physics, but I personally can't do it and my professors didn't make me want to either!

Favorites:
Immunology- in it right now and it's great
Microbial Physiology- our class project is making our own beer, should be ready in time for finals

All time favorite: Anatomy & Physiology from the Ag College. The prof. was great!

I had an electron microscopy lab course too (scanning and transmission) which was super-neat.

But as for real courses, I absolutely loved biochem. Had an awesome prof, which is always a plus. I had already had molecular bio, cell bio, microbio... and always felt like I wasn't getting the whole story. Biochem made me feel that I was learning what life (i.e. being a living system) was *really* all about.

Favorites so far: Human-Animal Interrelationships, Intro to Horse Science, Technical Writing

Least favorites: Colonial Latin America, History of Rock & American Pop Music

my absolute favorite class was immunology. ties a lot of other subjects together and we got to do clinical case studies every week which applied the material, it was awesome. It helpst that the professor was amazing as well. A close second would have to be bacterial pathogenesis. i never knew (even after microbiology) what exactly certain microbes did, and all the nasty damage they cause.k

least favorite: physics. my prof didn't care about anyone, turned his back to cheaters (and trust me, it was obvious) and told me it was my own problem when i didn't understand something. how do people like this keep their jobs?😕

haha Thanks for posting those InfiniVet!

My favorite was Immunology. And we're using the same textbook in vet school, so I can't complain. 😀

My favourite classes were Herpetology and Embryology... prof was amazing, which helps, but both classes were interesting. Lots of taxonomy, repro, physio, and morphology in Herp... even more physio and development of mostly the chick embryo in Embryology.

Oh, and in Herpetology, we got to go on a couple field trips, and the best was a behind-the-scenes tour of the Toronto Zoo (I'm from Ontario). Met alot of cool people, a baby Komodo dragon, a softshelled turtle, the polar bears, and jaguars up close and personal. 🙂

Favorites: Livestock Management, Equine Repro, and small animal care.
Least favorite: All of the pesky Gen Ed courses that I could care less about.

Animal behaviour, animal welfare, and this really cool Cornell subject called "The Global Seminar"- I did it in Melbourne and you have web meetings with the other students at Cornell, in Honduras, Costa Rica, Sweden, the Nethelands, etc etc. It was great fun! In Melbourne the Global Seminars were held at midnight 😀

Favorites:
Australian Wildlife Biology-took it in Australia, they have such cool animals!
Genetics-the professor had test problems about Harry Potter and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, always fun!

What Australian uni did you do that subject at? If I don't get into Vet I am enrolled in a subject called Australian Wildlife Biology.

The professor seems like the nicest lady ever.

My favourite class so far would have to be Earth Sciences - The Global Environment and Understanding Planet Earth. Earth Sciences was basically a mix of Geology and Meteorology and Understanding Planet Earth was just geology.

Favorite Classes: Undergrad--Italian, because I loved the awkward "skits" they make you do, like "Daniella, let us go to the discotheque." and Cell Bio, because I loved the prof. He would make "Kazam!" sounds when he talked about GDP and phosphorylation pathways.
Post Bacc: Organic chem, Mammalian Anatomy.

Least favorite: Stats and Physics both took a couple of years off of my life expectancy.
