Maybe you guys can curb my current freakout session...

I just took the GRE today and will be ordering my additional 3 score reports tomorrow. I know ETS takes it sweet time in scoring the writing section and sending out the reports so what happens if my schools don't get the reports until after Oct 1st?

I just saw that two of my schools, Illinois and Oregon, have an Oct 1st deadline for receiving GRE scores (AHHHHHHH!). Does anyone know if this is a hard and fast deadline? Can I kiss my shot at these schools goodbye? 🙁

I still haven't gotten my scores from the GRE I took at the end of last month : (

this whole stressful process is starting to wear on me.

You should be fine because the schools give you up until Oct 1 to take the GRE, correct? So they are aware the scores take longer to get there. Err on the side of caution and contact the schools to let them know the scores are forthcoming.

I took the GRE well in advance, but somehow Davis managed to lose my report TWICE. This did not affect the admissions process - they were really good at communicating with me about my incomplete file. In fact, I had something missing at nearly every single school I applied to due to postal problems and crossed wires and not a single school knocked me out of the process. They let me know what was missing and gave me ample time to fix things! (The specific schools I dealt with, as far as incomplete files go, were Davis, Kansas, Florida and VA-MD.)

HTH!

I would double check with your schools, because I know Mississippi requires you to have everything in by the deadline and even suggests on their website taking the GRE by Sept 1 to make sure you don't miss it.

yeah both of their websites recommend taking it months in advance. i only recently decided to apply to both of these schools and obviously wrongly assumed that all schools just wanted you to take it before oct. now i'm just praying that they have some sort of unspoken grace period. : (

i'm definitely calling first thing monday morning though.

will you let us know what they say?

I kicked like 2 schools (including Kansas) off my running list because I was under the impression that they needed your scores BY Oct 2nd.

From what I have gathered, most of the other schools I'm applying to want the GRE taken before Oct 1st but your results need to be in my Oct 31st/Nov 1st, etc, etc.

I guess it just depends on the school.

my friend told me that kansas and mississippi wanted the official scores sent to them by october 1st. im going to call some schools tomorrow. 🙁

Bunnyslippers--

You should definitely contact Illinois-- the last time I looked at their website I saw something that said they only accept GRE scores from tests taken before 8/31/08. I actually moved up my GRE test date to accommodate that. Sorry, not trying to make things worse, I just think you should definitely talk to them, give them a heads up about what's going on with your test. I know Wisconsin used to have a deadline like that (they don't this year) and my friend missed the deadline for Wisc last year and was still able to submit her app okay.

GOOD LUCK!

I definitely took the GRE two weeks before I had planned because all the schools I looked at required everything in by the 2nd. You should probably call.

So this is just a list of the schools i was interested in...but these schools WILL NOT accept your GRE score if you take it after september 1st (it says to allow a few weeks for ETS to send your official score. so i guess you could take it the 2nd week of sept, but they want the official scores sent to them by october 1st):

Illinois, Mississippi, Oregon, Washington, Kansas.

These schools say "take the gre by october 1st": florida, colorado, davis, virginia, Missouri, tufts, Michigan, Auburn.

I hope this helps some! i had to take some schools off my list. It's a bummer. But i'm thinking that things happen for a reason. 🙂

From what I have seen, all of the schools state on their website when they need the GRE scores by. It definitely does vary a lot so I would take the time to look up all the schools you are applying to and check..

Also, I thought you couldn't order additional score reports until you get your official score report in the mail? I tried to do it on the ets website the other day but didn't have any luck. Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks.

From what i thought i understood....that when you take the GRE you could add schools after the 5 free ones or something. but i dont know.

Okay amigos,

For anyone who was curious, here is what I found out for the schools I was worried about, Oregon and Illinois.

Oregon doesn't seem to care when you take the GRE as long as they get your scores by Oct 1st. I didn't ask directly, but the guy I spoke to made it sound like this deadline was set in stone. So unfortunately if you have yet to take the GRE or have taken it for the first time really recently you might want to take Oregon off your list because your scores probably won't get there in time. In my case, I took the GRE in late August and again September 13th. Because it takes like two weeks for ETS to grade the analytical writing section and then send out the scores, Oregon most likely won't get my scores for that one in time, but they will get my scores from my August test and that is good enough for them apparently.

As for Illinois they will not accept GRE scores from tests taken later than August 2008. So if you have or are taking it for the first time in September, bad news... On Illinois supplemental page they need to get your pre-September scores before October 15th so if you haven't sent Illinois your scores send them now and they should get there in time. https://admit-s.cvm.uiuc.edu/4DLink1/4DCGI/suppapp/greinfo/ID=test.09/CNT=38332

Oh, and I was having problems ordering additional score reports though the ETS site so I called them. Apparently the site is down so you need to order your scores via the phone or mail. It would have been nice if they made a mention of that on the website, don't you think?

ALSO, if you are cutting it close and are waiting for your score report to be sent to you before ordering additional reports, call ETS and ask them if your scores have been finalized yet. You can order the reports as soon as they are even if you haven't gotten your notification in the mail yet.

It's amazing how thorough you can be and still miss all these deadlines and notes. I wish this process was more standardized.

Tell me about it!! Just to look up stuff on these vet school sites you have to click on soo many links. I already told a friend that I plan on printing EVERYTHING up that has helped me and making a notebook to share with friends that are applying next year.

Thanks for starting this post. I'm definitely one of those people having to take schools off my list. I think they should straight out say "Last day to take the GRE is _____". their wording was a little confusing if you weren't paying attention, you know?

I had extra score reports sent out before I got my GRE score report mailed to me.

I waited about 10 days after taking the test, then called the phone number, paid $12 to hear what my scores were so that I could finish some supplementals, then paid to have the extra score reports sent out. Seemed to work fine and they say its the quickest way of getting your scores out to a school.

Oregon seems to be very tough on their deadline for EVERYTHING. I'm getting the impression that if you want to go to Oregon, make sure your app is complete and on time!!!!!

Yeah, it definitely doesn't help that a lot of schools have really confusing websites. Why say that I can take the GRE up until Sept 30th when you need to have the scores in by Oct 1st? Or almost completely hide the fact that you have a supplemental and make its link next to impossible to find?

Sorry for complaining so much, but I just needed to vent! I wish I had everything in already...

Well, I was (and could still be, LOL) applying this year. I've had the VMSAR 2008 edition for 2009 matriculation book for several months now and took a GRE prep course back in May, but have yet to take my GRE or apply.

I just don't know what it is, cold feet? I wanted everything to be absolutely perfect and I wanted to work on my personal statement for at least a year. In preparation of applying this year I bumped up my hours at work and course loads in school. Now the deadline is approaching (pretty much here), and all I have done so far is register on the VMCAS website and filled in basic info (i.e. name, address, marital status…).

Anyways, I guess I am rambling 😛. I am just glad to see this forum is filled with legitimate pre-vet students. What I am trying to figure out is.... maybe I should just apply to a few schools this year even though my application won't be as "perfect" as I wanted to make it. At the very least it will get my foot in the door, right? So, does anyone think I have a shot at taking the GRE this week and rushing applications in next week to schools that aren't so set on a GRE score deadline? And you thought you were pushing it bunnyslippers, haha! I will look in the VMSAR book to figure out which schools have later GRE deadlines and report back to y'all.

So, any opinions?

DrFrekels,

Welcome to SDN!

The only thing I'd be concerned about with it being so late in the application cycle is your letters of recommendation. Many evaluators need more than 2 weeks to write a proper evaluation, because they have lives too, and you don't want them to do it under pressure either. You certainly could finish filling out the VMCAS application and all the supplementals for schools you're thinking about, and you certainly could take the GRE and only apply to schools that have a deadline for taking it but none for receiving scores - but if your rec letters don't make it there on time it's all for nothing.

So I'd think long and hard about the people you are going to have write your letters, and consider if you think they will be able to do them in time.
