what do u think?
would u change ur mind?

eg. to an adcom, u might look perfectly fine on papers but ur friends think u r gonna end up killing ppl by accident....

I would quit immediately and switch to a degree in English.

only if you are going to be writing letters/op reports/referrals/prescriptions in instant message talk. "Hiz aneuryzzzzm was lol". "ur totally gooing 2b on plavix...jk... ur gonna die." then, id say go for it.

I think you should consider who is saying these things. Are any of them physicians? I doubt it. You may at this point be clutsy or irresponsible as a college student, but that doesnt mean that you wont be a consummate professional while on the wards. The only person who needs to think they will be a good physician is you.

Dood, u shud totally not let them get u doun...they hav no idea bout ur edukashun. Follow ur hart!!!one!!eleventy-one!!!

I'm absent minded, which leads to jokes about leaving car keys in patients, etc.

If you feel they have legitimate points, you should think about it. It took me a while to decide that forgetfulness is not crippling.

i wouldn't change any mind of mine. but i'd would highly consider a partner who has a lot of experiences in funeral home business. that's the way to prove that all of my friends are wrong, either way.

I'm kind of lucky here - all the non-doctors have refrained from criticizing my potential in a field they know nothing about and so have all the medical professionals I've ever come in contact with. If I had a doctor telling me, "I think you'll suck," I'd think twice, but instead of bursting into tears and setting my AMCAS on fire, I'd just ask him or her to explain exactly why and then give me suggestions on how to fix whatever they think is lacking. And as far as negative comments from people who are not familiar with the field - not only are they not doctors, but I probably already know more than they do, by virtue of being personally involved in the application process. It's like when I have problems at work - I'll listen to my stepfather's suggestions, because he's been in the workforce for 20 years and is a top manager, but I generally ignore my mother's, since she doesn't know what she's talking about. You just have to filter what comes your way.

Agreed. There is a time and place for text message speak, and a preprofessional board isn't really it.

OP, you have to provide more details as to why everyone thinks you will be a bad doctor if you want useful input. If they are well founded concerns, you ought to listen. Being a doctor isn't just about what you want to do, it requires you to be able to do the job.

If the people that know you think you are going to kill someone, then chances are that you might kill a few people. Dentistry calls your name.

There are many different fields in medicine and each of them caters to different talents. Therefore a person that has arthritis or a hand twitch should probably NOT be a surgeon but they still could be a fine physician in another field. So although a friend might be able to have enough judgement to say a person shouldn't be a surgeon or pediatrician (if they're terrible with kids) or some other field, saying an individual will be a terrible doctor is a bit ridiculous.

Don't allow anyone to forcibly tell you, what you should and shouldn't be, as if it's etched in stone. No one knows you better than you, if becoming a doctor is truly your heart's desire and you firmly believe you can succeed, then by all means, press forward with your plans. Try to avoid these types of negative conversations, if at all possible, or else you will constantly keep second guessing yourself, kindly tell your "friends" in the most gentle way to support your vision or shut up. :meanie:

Here's a better question - do YOU think you are going to be a bad physician?

you could just be a radiologist 👍

I get this alot. I'm a jackass, and it makes me seem uncaring. A lot of people look shocked when I say I'm going into medicine. The doctors and charites I've worked with disagree, however.

i feel u, man
most ppl i know either think im a jackass, a *******, or a klutz
i feel sad sometimes

If they say it because you don't seem like a "people person," there's always pathology, radiology, etc. I think the posters above are right. The bottom line is what *you* think. If you think they're right, then perhaps you should rethink your career direction. If you think you'd make a great doctor, prove them wrong!

haha... I'd ditch them and get new friends. I've had very negative friends before... the ones that always have terrible days and the ones that make you question everything... the negativity's not worth the label of friendship when you're in a competitive field.
