Hello everyone! I was just discussing my admission prospects with my wife. We are trying to decide whether I should accept an acceptance from an expensive private school or wait to see if I get accepted to a state school. I'm sure that you all realize what a risk it is to say no to an acceptance before you have heard from other schools. Anyway, my question is this: If I accept the offer from the private school (because they only give 4 weeks to reply) will I literally be "stuck" going there? If I still get accepted to a state school can I change my mind and go there instead? I know that there may be some issues with regard to my "deal" with the private school, but is there anything that can be enforced(like them contacting the state school and telling them that I backed out of my "contract")? Anyway, I'm just trying to cover myself because I don't want to do anything that will leave me without an acceptance anywhere. I appreciate all of your comments in advance. Thanks a bunch!

I was under the impression that by accepting an offer you are not "bound" to it. I knew a guy that was accepted and trying to decide between two schools into April. Contact the school you got into and see if they have any policy regarding a deposit, but I am sure that you are not "bound" to anything by accepting.

No, you won't be stuck going to the private school if you accept their offer. You can hold onto multiple acceptances until May 15th. A lot of people hold onto acceptances while waiting to compare financial aid offers. I would go ahead and accept the private school's offer of admission, and hope that you get into one of your state schools. If you do get in a less expensive school that you would rather attend, just withdraw your app from the private school. Best of luck!

Thank you ucsfreak and md2b06! That helps a lot. I appreciate your help! Long live SDN! And good luck to you!

it's may 15. that's when they can find out where else you've been accepted and if you're holding multiple acceptances they can take theirs away.

a lot of schools have march 15 as a big admit day which might be why there's confusion.

The medical schools have to issue acceptances equal to or greater than the number of available positions by March 15th. They cannot take action on any invdividual that holds multiple acceptances until May 15th.

These are <a href="http://www.aamc.org/students/applying/policies/recommendations.htm" target="_blank">guidelines</a> set by AAMC but the schools are not required to adhere to them. They are just suggested guidelines.
