Due to the sensitivity of this subject I want to remain anonymous. Because of this I will not be posting any of my medical history or the decisions made by my primary doctor.

I have been ill and through the course of my treatment a number of specialists (more than 5) from different fields have asked me if I am going to sue my doctor. Three specifically said that I was in this position because my doctor put me on a medication longer than any person should ever be.

I'm a pre-med student finishing up my pre reqs for medical school and getting ready to apply. It is hard for me to come to grips with this because I myself am pursuing medicine. However, my life has severely been changed. My body is now permanently disfigured and there is nothing that can change that. I'm not disabled, but I no longer have the physical capabilities that I did a year ago, and most likely never will. I've been left in a state of chronic pain. I'm pursuing every avenue I have to heal my body but permanent damage has been done. My saving grass has been medical insurance. Over the course of this ordeal I have racked up over 600k in medical bills.

I think it's a little crazy that my dream of getting in to medical school and become a doctor might impede me from taking legal actions that a number of people seem to feel are warranted. I want to hear opinions that are backed up with reasons as to what decision I should make. I would be grateful to hear from admins as to how the would view a situation like this, where a student has sued a doctor, and if they have come across a situation like this. Can medical schools see if you've sued someone?

Please respect the fact that I don't want to share the specifics. If it helps, try to look at it as an MMI question in which a patient has received negligent medical care, but they are afraid to sue their doctor because they themselves want to become a doctor one day.

Thank You

Why would your status as a pre-med matter in any way? Schools would only find out about this if you for some reason wanted to tell them

SDN is not for medical advice, and we certainly aren't going to be able to give you legal advice. If you have concerns about malpractice then I would recommend discussing with a lawyer whether they think you have grounds for a suit.

You can sue a doctor for malpractice and still go to medical school. However, you might not want to mention it in your application.

If you have legitimate reasons to sue your doctor (it seems like you do from your post), then you should first consult with a lawyer and then plan your next steps. Suing a doctor as a patient does not necessarily imply that you hold a negative view about the whole medical community. Everything in your medical history is confidential and in no way are you obligated to disclose your legal actions against a doctor in your medical school applications.

No. But keep in mind that the legal process is along one, and can you afford to take time away from med school to get called onto the witness stand or give depositions? I'm also very sorry to hear of your woes, but I don't think SDN is a place for soliciting legal advice, just as it shouldn't be a place for medical advice.
