Hello everyone, I'm an IMG willing to join a residency program in the US.
I was wondering if I can practice medicine outside the US once my training is complete and I get my board certifications; for example as an ABIM certified doctor.
I'm asking this because I'm an European Union citizen, and I don't know if the Medical license in the US will allow me to practice in EU without restarting a post-graduate medical program, in case that I will be forced to go back to Europe.
Unfortunately I can't find useful informations here in Europe about US certified physicians;
So, Do you know anyone in the US who has undertaken this path?

Each country will have its own licensing requirements, eg the GMC looks after licensing in the UK - they have all the info on their website. Essentially it's possible, but you need to provide evidence that your US training is equivalent to postgrad training in the UK - you might not be able to enter at consultant level straight out of residency, but you should at least be able to get a license to train. Make sure you keep a thorough training portfolio up to date throughout residency.

My plan is to train and practice in the US, but since not all the residency programs provide an H1-B visa, I wanted to be better informed in the case I'll be forced to come back in EU.

In some countries the answer depends on specialty as well, i.e. places where a need has been identified have less strict requirements. Singapore is an example of this, not sure about Europe. Some countries will also allow a kind of provisional status operating technically under supervision for a couple years (again, S'pore). If you are open to Oz or NZ, they seem to be pretty liberal about letting US-trained docs practice there.
