what is a great resource for learning pharmacology -- something that is an effective teaching tool but not overwhelming in terms for info or amoutn of info? thanks

Good luck in finding one. I was left with no other choice but to use the class notes. I only studied pharm 1 day before each exam since pathophys was coming to hard to pay much attention to pharm. During that day, I made charts for all of the drugs under columns of Mechanism of action, Indication, Side-effects, and so on and obesessively read them over and over until I memorized the charts.

Our required textbook is Katzung's Clinical Pharm. So far it seems to be pretty good. I just ordered the Katzung's Pharm Board Review book because it's supposed to be much better for exam and board studying than the Lippincotts... Hopefully I didn't just waste money! 😉

lippincott's is pretty good. it's a fast read and leaves out the extraneous detail.

Oh, yeah, Lippincott is great for the diagrams! I didn't use it for pharm class but I did use the diagrams for board study.

katzung and trevors leaves out the bullshiz too.

kat and trev is high yield.

you can make it even more high yield by typing your own notes from the kat and trev.

Our required book is Basic & Clinical Pharmacology by Katzung. Does anyone know which is better between that book and the board review book by Katzung & Trevor?

Pharm Recall is a good book. It leaves out alot of BS and the material is presented in a Q/A format. Check it out. See what you think.

Hey,
Just recently came across Pharmacology at a Glance by M.J. Neal - it's British and the series is pretty popular with med students in the UK. I can safely say it has saved my ass. It cuts out all the unnecessary crap and just gives you what you need to know. Actually, pharmacology is probably my favorite subject right now. Seriously. Go buy it, you'll see what I mean.

Clinical Pharmacology by Rang, Dale & Ritter (5th edition) is absolutely phenomenal! Unlike other books, the approach has been not just to describe what drugs do but to emphasise the mechanisms by which they act, where possible at the cellular and molecular level. The fifth edition retains the short summaries of relevant physiological and biochemical processes placed at the beginning of most chapters to form a basis for the subsequent discussion of pharmacological actions.

My two cents...

All the books suck. Get flashcards and plenty of question books.
