What is an MBBS, is it a normal degree or a masters degree? I do not understand. I would perhaps like to become a doctor but do not understand the route to become one. 5 years in medical school - then what happens? do you have to move to london or somewhere to complete the degree, i thought yopu had to have a phd... do you get a phd at the end of it?

Please help im really confused

i would like to become a GP

neonchill, where are you? An MBBS is a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Science. It's the UK equivalent of an MD. The reason the medicine degree is a bachelor's is because medicine in the UK at the moment is an undergraduate course.

In the US, medical school is a post-graduate 4 year degree. In the UK, medicine is either a 4 yr. course (fast track) or 6 year course, although there may be some 5 year programs and some 5 year "direct entrant" programs (for those people who have already completed an undergraduate science degree, they get to skip the 1st year pre-clinical year of medical school).

Heh, no..you don't have to move to London....there are medical schools all over the UK... And no, you don't get a PhD at the end of it. The confusion may arise because the US uses the title MD to refer to physicians, whereas an MD in the UK means a higher research degree after completion of an MBBS.

Perhaps you should visit the SDN International - Europe forum. There's a lot of good UK info. there.

DOs are also physicians in the US but British-trained DOs are not fully liscensed to practice medicine.

MBBS is actually Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Bachelor of Science according to the British is abbreviated B.Sc.). MBBS is the primary medical qualification in most of Britain's former colonies as well (i.e. the Commonwealth). It is a 5-6 year programme that, typically, immediately follows high school (known as the Advanced Level). As stated in the earlier post, MD in these countries is granted for postgraduate work.
