So I've recently been reading a lot of posts on SDN and I keep coming across sending an update letter to medical schools after applying on new developments.

What exactly is an update letter? Do you write a formal letter explaining what you have done recently after submitting the application? Does it go through AMCAS or directly to the schools?

I would really appreciate it if someone could explain a little.

Thank you!

If you have something you want to tell them after you've already applied you can do it in an update letter. It's usually reserved for schools you really want to attend. You just send them to individual schools, not AMCAS. And many schools ask you not to send them anything until after you've been invited for an interview, so they don't get buried in paperwork.
