Maybe I have been wandering on SDN a little too much, but I was wondering how many clinical hours are required for a competitive application. I know there are students with thousands of hours, but I am only projected to have 300-330 clinical hours. I was wondering if that is enough or if I should take a gap year to solidify that.

>150 is a commonly cited number. Wanna hear a more important number? 528

A sufficient amount is enough to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of a clinical environment. Some people can put in 1,000 hours volunteering an ER and still come out thinking that a nurse’s only job is to complain. Some can do 110 hours in a hospice and come out with a real understanding of the value of proper communication and life.

It isn’t about a hard number, it is about perception of value.

TL;DR >150 hours if you are box checking.
