Hello.

Can someone describe the curriculum in Pre-Med and Med respectively in the States. I know that Pre-med is more science-based with focus on chemistry, physics and biology, whereas medicine resembles medical courses worldwide. But can someone describe which subjects one has during pre-med.

And is it a neccessity for medical students to take pre-med before starting?

Thanks.
Singh

Pre-med is typically undertaken after graduation from high school. The normal process takes four years (from about age 18 to age 22, give or take a year or so), and one is awarded a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science at the end of the course of study.

Pre-med involves taking required coursework for admission to medical school (calculus, general and organic chemistry, biology, and physics) as well as coursework required for a bachelor's degree. Many pre-med students concentrate in biology or chemistry, but many other major in completely different fields.

In the US, you have to complete pre-med requirements (calculus, general/organic chemistry, physics, and biology) at the university level before being admitted to medical school. It is technically possible to be admitted after only completing these classes, but it is very rarely done. Most Americans are age 21 or older when they begin medical school, and have been out of secondary school for four or more years.

Thanks for your thorough answer! 🙂

put lump o coal up thy ass and a diamond shall appear 2 weeks later.

defines premed. 😀

technically there is no such thing as a pre med. Once you decide you want to became a doctor you become a pre med. The pre med courses are the minimum science courses that med schools demand you take in order to evaluate you. these include 1 year of biology, 1 year each of general and organic chem and 1 year of physics. Some schools require english, spanish and upper level math courses. You can major in anything you want and take the pre med courses. The MCATS supposedly test the knowledge gained from these classes.
hope that helped

As you probably already know now, premed classes include the prerequisite classes that you need in order to apply to study medicine in medical school. These prerequisite classes include biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, etc. Once you get admission into a medical school, you are then studying medicine. hope this helps. i know things can get confusing about the American medical system. Good luck

hey there, i will share with you that i am going into pre med in europe, and it only lasts 1 year!

thanks all you great people
regards, 🙂

If Ambrose Bierce had pre-med in "The Devil's Dictionary," he would have wrote the following.

PreMed 👎: A meaningless label a pretentious ahole applies to himself in order to impress others by implying he will attend med school. Most in fact never actually become med students.

LOL..... exactly

What is pre-med? Pre-med is the guy who asked me four times in twenty minutes if the exam was going to be multiple choice or short answer. I was his biochemsitry TA. The good news is he didn't get into med school. The bad news... he's a pharmacist now :scared:

Premed are the people who hound their graduate student TA's for every last possible bit of partial credit even when their answer was so far off the mark they're lucky My Red Pen of Pain and Retribution didn't just there sorry butt a zero. 😛
