I thought it was research, however, after asking a few advisers from my school what the most efficient EC to focus on, they all said something to the effect of shadow doctors in the speciality you're interested in. One said research only matters if you're interested in Derm, Rads, Ortho...

But shadowing? Isnt that pre-med stuff? Did they suggest it because of the networking component?

Shadowing? Get new advisers.

The best EC is research. First author on multicenter randomized controlled trials published in NEJM is what you should be aiming for.

Just having a balanced, interesting life is awesome. Find some way to show it, though. Diverse interests and competencies are sexy. If you think that's not you, research it is.

lol nvm, I misread your post and thought you were premed. Research, no question, but make it count.

Ya definitely shadow a doctor in the field you want, because this totally outweighs away rotations in the field you want and research (sarcasm implied). Come on, what kind of advisers would say that to a med student haha. You think residency coordinators cared if you followed a doctor around a few days when you have 2 years of rotations under your belt.

Now away rotations in the hospital and field that you are applying for makes sense, but shadowing.....ROFL

And people wonder why med students are so frustrated by the "advising" their med school gives them.
