the structural formula is PH3..
what is the molecular geometry and what is the hybridization of P in PH3 (phosphine)?

i came across this qsn in ochem odyssey and it says the hybrization is sp2 but i think it is incorrect, so i would like to confirm

what chapter is this question in, I don't remember seeing it. but I do random problems were chapter so I might've skipped it.

are you sure its a mistake or the scribbling. sometimes it can be sloppy.

I have it as sp3.

It should be sp3. The valence electron on Phosphorus is 5 and 1 for each H so 5+3 = 8 electrons
So on the structure of PH3, you will have 3 bonds to H and 1 lone pair of electron on Phosphorus.. Total of 8 electrons... So; it should be sp3.
👍

yeah sp3 is what i thought since phosphorus has 3 e-domain

this qsn is in chapter 1 qsn 9.. you will find it in the answers at the back.. mines saying sp2

thanks for the quick reply guys
