I'm a sophomore in college and I'm currently taking organic chemistry II. As the semester is drawing to end, my professor and I have predicted that I will end up with a B or a B+, possibly an A- if I do exceptional on the final. This got me thinking, what is the lowest grade in a class (especially a pre-req or upper division science course) that you can have before you should retake the class?

As always, opinions will vary by school and individual. Personally, I think a retake is in order for any grade below a B-.

I'd say a C- or D. With a C, I'd probably just take an addition upper level class and do well in it. You'll get more out of taking a different class, IMO. Getting a B is no biggie at all. No med school's average GPA is a 4.0. No worries. 🙂

I think anything below a C is where you should consider re-taking. Re-taking a C doesn't make much sense to me since even if you get an A the second time through, when AMCAS averages the two grades together and you effectively get a B, you only moved up one letter grade. You might as well just take a higher level course to show you're capable of handling the material.

Also, this isn't really a "What are my chances" question, so I'm going to move it into Pre-Allo 🙂

ksmi, i want to say that i'm continually impressed by your ability to be genuine and sweet to posters who ask questions like this! seriously-- my instincts tell me to post something nasty about using the search function (which i usually refrain from doing...). so good job 👍 🙂

🙂 Thanks. I've experienced the frustrations of the search function before. It has been very not helpful in helping me find threads that I know exist. So for a new poster, I can imagine it could be even more not helpful. And it's usually easier to just answer the question.

I agree with posters that anything below a C- needs a retake. And since you will get at least a B in the class, you are a grade and a half away from a retake, IMO.

OP, there would be a lot of pre-meds out there that are jealous and would love to be in the position you are in. As it has been stated numerous times, unless you are in danger of failing or just squeaking by, you should take the grade and move on. In addition, to help improve your grade, get off of sdn and hit the books. Best of luck on your final (acs final), and hope you get the A-.

First, realize that many schools will not allow you to retake if you get a C or higher. If you had taken the class P/F, a C would mean you passed the class and that would make you ineligible. A C- typically is seen as a "failing" grade. Some schools require C's or higher in order to take the second step of a sequenced courses (ie OChem 1 to OChem 2)

That said, even if you are able to take the class again, you have to wonder what the benefit will actually be. Unless you completely bombed it or have to get a certain grade to take another required class, I think it's usually an awful idea to retake a class.

Let's say you get a straight C with a 74.2% in the class - passing, but obviously lower than you want. You, being a nervous pre-med decide to take it over again...what are the possible outcomes:

1) You ace the class, get and A+...and adcoms look at the grade and say "well, yeah...they took the class a second time, what type of idiot can't get something the second time through?"

2) You do better than previously, but it's a really hard class and you still only get a B+...and adcoms look at the grade and say "WTF, they retook it and still couldn't get an A?"

3) Heaven forbid you do the same or even worse, you might as well give up and start thinking about law school...they tend to be very impressed when anyone takes anything harder than history or polisci. Patent lawyers make a lot of money too and have some stringent requirements that undergrad majors be scientific in nature...maybe that's your best chance.

Options 1 and 2 are not good, the improvement of your AMCAS GPA is marginal, and the impressions of taking a class over again, probably nullify any gains made. There's simply nothing good that comes out of retaking a marginal grade. Getting an F or being in a situation where you can't take a required course further on down the line are obviously different and necessitate retaking, but otherwise, it's really not worth the time and effort.

I agree retake below a C... I got C's in 2 pre-req chem courses and a calculus course...it didn't hurt me in the long run (But I will say I made a C in Orgo 1 and an A in Orgo 2 to prove I could handle the subject)

i was wondering the same thing as im making a B in my O Chem class right now...

the bad thing in my case is that I can't even make a Low A anymore... and its just O-Chem I...

Don't sweat it too much. I'm taking Orgo 2 right now, and it's a tough subject to say the least. I've done pretty well in my other sciences, but like everyone else, this course is definitely a toughie. Just put in a consistent effort daily, and there's no reason you shouldn't be able to hit a B/B+ at least.

Good luck!

So what? The fact that its "Just ochem I" doesnt mean anything. I got a B in ochem I and did signifincatly better in Ochem II.... if you figure out why it is you are getting a B and then you put in the effort to change it........you'll probably end up getting a better grade. Dont defeat yourself before you even take the class. Its a different semester, different material, maybe even a different teacher. You start from ground zero again.....no reason you cant get an A in ochem II. But you cant do it with that kinda attitude. Also, a few Bs isnt going to kill your app, so just shrug it off and keep chuggin along.
