Are these three programs on the same level as the top 30 programs? I've seen many posts on SDN talking about which programs are most prestigious and which is ranked the highest. These 3 programs all have great match lists, but I have never seen them mentioned on the same level as UAB, Vandy, or any of the others generally considered in the top 2 tiers. Any one want to throw in their two cents?

I don't have experience with cedars sinai or UCLA harbor view but personally I think JHU bayview is a very solid program- probably just under the top tier. Just looking at their match list makes you realize that they are a very good program and has a match list that resembles a lot of the top tier places. You do some rotations at JHH and you have access to JHH research which cannot be said of other programs.

The only thing is a lot of people at JHH poopoo the program as weak but I think that may just be the whole Osler marine mentality that if you don't go through all the bullshi7 JHH makes you go through that your training must be inferior. The training at bayview is solid

I went to Bayview and would agree with the post above. If you had any questions you could PM me or I could answer in this thread as well. There are several posts about Bayview over the years if you search the message board. It is an amazing program, but small (about 50 residents total) and does live in the shadow of JHH. But, that might be a shadow you want to be in.

Some Osler residents rotate at Bayview for MICU and CICU. I talked to one Osler resident and he really likes the experience at Bayview and the caliber of Bayview residents.

In terms of academic reputation, cedars-sinai and Harbor-UCLA are not in the same league as the top 30. Cedars Sinai may gain a higher reputation being in a highly desirable area with a big name where many stars go to for their health care, in addition to a decent match list and cush work hours. Though if you try to rank it against other university programs, it is not comparable, I did a Sub-I rotation there and its glaringly lacking in academics.

Harbor-UCLA is a different story. Its an academic county hospital program which is quite rare. Many skilled qualified clinicians have come out of Harbor-UCLA happy. I feel like it can be ranked against certain university programs, not in the top 30, but I feel like it can ranked higher than the tier of lets say Temple or Tufts if you want to compare to east coast university programs. The drawback of Harbor-UCLA is it has the least aesthetically pleasing hospital I have ever seen, in addition to having to a hectic environment and really having to work hard, which is not a bad thing at all.

Moreover, I don't think that being ranked in the "top 30" means anything. If you care about what other people think about you when you talk about where you went for residency and don't care about if you would be happy there or a great clinician then go for a "top 30" program but I know you can get equally great training if not better at other programs.

All Osler residents rotate through MICU and CCU at bayview during their second year. Most people really like it and running Bayview's MICU or CCU during your second year is a nice transition to running JHH's during your third year.
