I am applying for Air Force HPSP, and i would like to know what a military physician's base pay is...and what bonuses are available for certain specialities...any one have this info?

if you are in fact completing the application for the scholarship...ask the person recruiting you...they have a comprehensive list for each specialty which also includes bonuses given...i looked at the sheet but really cant remember off hand...plus i think you need to narrow down what type of physician you want to know the salary of...obviously cardiologist make more than those specializing in family medicine

I've seen one of those sheets, and I seem to recall physicians in most specialties getting paid a captain's salary (that's what you'll be ranked when you graduate), which is ~85,000. I think that some specialties do offer bonuses or more pay every year, but for most it is just a captain's salary. On a side note, it must be pretty cool to not even really be in the military and have people saluting to you because your a captain and out-rank them. I'd take walks and tell people that I didn't like to drop and give me 20.

I'm not sure where you pulled this out of or what you think this is supposed to mean, but whatever it's supposed to mean you clearly are clueless.

Ummm yeah...Captains are sooo high ranking, people on base stand in utter awe and admiration at the sight of a captain walking down the street...PLEASE

I'd take walks and tell people that I didn't like to drop and give me 20.

RIIGHHT....and they would promptly either knock you on your A$$ or tell you to kiss theirs.

Do us who ARE in the military a favor and go back to watching reruns of Gomer Pyle and save your fantasies for the mirror...

Sure thing...

http://www.dfas.mil/money/milpay/pay/

This is the website that outlines base pay and housing allowence (BAH).

Based on this year's pay scale an O-3 (Capt. for the army/af, or Lt. for the Navy) coming onto active duty to start residency would make $2933.00/ month in base pay. On top of that you would get ~$170.00/month for food(BAS), plus you would get BAH which varies by the cost of living from place to place and also if you are married or single. For instance in DC you might get $1800/ month if you are single or $2000 with dependents while somewhere where the cost of living is lower you might get half that, (these numbers are hypothetical but should be in the ballpark, the BAH website is down right now) regardless it works out so you are able to live in a nice place with little or no extra money out of your pocket. On top of that you will get $100.00/month for Medical Officer Variable Special Pay (after your internship year it goes up to $416.00). So if you add it all up and say just for kicks that you are living in an area where you get $1000/month for housing you are looking at ~$4200.00/ month as an intern. Your second year of residency would be pretty much the same except for the extra $316/month you'd get for the VSP. After you've been in for 2 years you will get a raise in base pay of about $400/month and after 3 years you get another $250/month.

At this point if you are doing an FP, EM or IM residency you are finished. So now your base pay is up to $3562/month, you are still getting BAH and BAS at (our hypothetical $1000/month) and ~$170, plus VSP of $416.00, plus $15,000/year (lump sum) Additional Special Pay (ASP), plus $2500/year Board Certified pay, plus Incentive Special Pay which varies from specialty to specialty, since we are talking about being out of residency after 3 years we'll say that we did our residency in EM who gets a yearly lump sum of $26,000... So you are looking at making~$105k/year the first year out of residency as an EM doc. Base pay goes up with time in service and when you get promoted (0-4 comes about 6 years after you first become a captain)

Anyway, hopefully this was helpful and not too confusing...
