Hi,

Im a predent student filling up UPenn's secondary application now. I would like to know what is unique at UPenn~ and what kind of student they are looking for?

one specific question is "what qualities of UPenn do you feel will help you achieve your professional goals and how?" .. im really into community service ~ so if anyone can also provide me some specific outreach programs at UPenn, that will be great! THANKS!!!!! 🙂

There are two unique things the price and the name. If you care about the name more then the price it’s the school for you. They ate up the fact that I did research in undergrad. As for community service there are plenty of homeless people you can feed around the school.

It's also unique in that they keep their dental students in a dingy ole basement for the first two years and they keep saying they are going to upgrade their labs/clinics but never do. : )

Trust me, they are not "unique" in that aspect. We do not see daylight at OSU either. Guess you get used to it after a while though...could be worse.

Many dental schools keep their students in the basement. I don't know why people get so bent out of shape over our basement. The rooms we are in are very nice (though not having windows does get a little annoying). The upgrades of the clinics has started. By next year, all the chairs will be replaced. We also hope to have Dentrix in all the clinics within two years. Regarding the labs, I know that most dental students will agree with me that the quality of your instructors is INFINITELY more important than the condition of the preclinical lab. Our lab is a little old, but I wouldn't trade in my instructors for a new lab.

Well said. 👍 Earlier this summer I was invited to be a part of a panel which met with a group of area pre-dental students and one of the topics that came up was the issue of facilities and the over all esthetic of a school. I raised the point that a dental school is so much more than the sum of the paint or drywall hanging on it's interior. It's true that there are some areas in Penn that need renovating but what stood out even more to me was the warm nature of the student body and the caliber of the instructors here. Like edkNARF I wouldn't trade any of my instructors for a new coat of paint or a new lab. I would say that what sets Penn Dental apart are the instructors, which treat you like a colleague and will bend-over-backwards to help you, and the positive and supportive student body.

The price is pretty unique, NYUs the only other similar school i can think of in this reguard😀

I want to go to penn!!!!
