i am wondering what is a dental student's life like? how many hours do u study? what do u do on the weekends? do u have time or no life?? any of u hold jobs? also i was wondering how many people actually fail from dental school?..if u fail a class can u make it up in the summer? do u repeat the year?? r u studying the summers too?..thanks

From what I hear, dental students have it worse than med students in alot of places (Im a med student, btw). I feel your pain guys

I have class from 9-4 most days, stay at school to study for a few hours, come home for dinner and a short break, then often go back to school to spend some time waxing or looking at the cadavers. When I do that, I don't get home until around 10, then come home and keep studying until my eyes refuse to stay open. Weekends are mostly spent on lecture classes (as opposed to lab work). Think of how hard you studied for finals in undergrad -- every test is like that in dental school.

I must say, though, that dental students work hard but play just as hard... we go out every week and after every major test. You'd think it would be a bunch of nerds, but my classmates are so cool, and smart too. If there's something you do that you're really passionate about, you'll find time for it, you just might have to make some sacrifices.

When people ask me how my first year is going, I tell them that it's both the hardest thing I've ever done and the most fun I've ever had. And of course there's the light at the end of the tunnel. As one of my professors told us on the first day, dental school is NOT dentistry... it won't be like this for the rest of your career!

From the different dental students (from different schools) I've spoken to, this HIGHLY varies depending on what dental school they attend.

Yes it does depend on what school you attend. At Temple your Freshman year is cake. I skiiped class alot went to the shore. But after that its hell 2nd year sucks class after class after class. School is just a short time your so busy that time flys the minutes may seem like hours but the months seem like weeks. Youll be like where did september go. Its cool you learn alot.

hey, i had this mentalility when i started, i thought i was going to be studying non-stop. however, i think you can put into your studying whatever you want. what i mean, if you want the A's, ya ur going to be studying your butt off. i dont really care about the A's, and have been passing everything, and i really dont study for more than 1-2 hrs a night, and possibly study on sunday and take saturday off, except if we have a test. your life is NOT necessarily gonna be studying 5-6 hrs every nite, as many ppl would want you to believe, good luck

and by the way, i also have a part time job. its nothing crazy, but i teach at kaplan like 6 hrs a week. definately never interferred with my studying.

Honestly, I think it all depends on the school you attend. We take our boards after our first year, so right now school is absolute hell! However, like mentioned earlier, I am having the best time of my life! We have class everyday from 8-5, and usually end up coming back in the evening to work in lab. I study about 3-5 hours everynight and I still feel like I am falling behind. I take Friday night off because if I don't, I think I might go insane.

When we don't have exams (which hasn't been for three weeks now 🙁 ), we go out, you can definitely have a social life in dental school. My classmates are amazing and we have a great time when we go out. I am not trying to compare Med and Dental school, but our med students tell us all the time that we have it much harder. They are in class from 8-12 and are free for the rest of the day. Dental school is extremely demanding and there will be times when you are like "I can't take anymore", but somehow it always works out! Good luck!! 👍

Life of a 4th year student: take Friday for example

Struggle to wake up 9

10am: First patient: removable pros, initial impressions and i'm out in about 40 mins.

11:30am: Decide I've worked hard enough for the week and take Friday afternoon off.

1pm: Work on the golf game: a jumbo bucket at the driving range.

3pm: Is it really 3pm already? No wonder I'm so exhausted. Nap time.

5pm: Wake up wondering what day it is.

5pm-7pm: Around the horn, PTI, and two episodes of the simpsons, while simultaneously playing three tables of online poker.

8pm: Go out to grab some dinner and get some early pre-game in.

11pm: Head up to Franklin St with the boys to some bars.

2:15pm: After a long night of bar-hopping, it's time for some late-night food. THe biggest box of pokey sticks you have ever seen.

3:30. Play some more online poker, pass out with the computer on my lap, and probably lose 10 bucks in blinds.

1pm Saturday: Struggle to get up. Repeat friday.

My life as a 4th year.......I see patients as I schedule them, get out at 11:00....have a leisurely lunch......see a patient at 1:00.....get out at 3:30, do some lab work, have dinner, watch TV, think about studying for part II.....go to sleep.

Aahhh. If you guys can just hang in there. Although that's not to say that I'm not totally freaked out about state boards, competencies, finding a job.....those moments are just few and far between. Much less stressing now than 1st year. Damn, 1st year was absolute hell.

Harvard? No, UNC. Trust me I've done more in clinic than probably 90% of the people in 4th year at other schools. Considering I'm taking boards this weekend (endo and pros), well I guess i can just let you know when i pass it.

DcS can't win a hand to save his life (online or in Vegas)...and he forgot to mention his 30-hr a week part-timer on the side to cover his poker losses. 🙂

I'm sure it varies for everyone. I'd say my school is relatively stringent clinically and didactically as compared with many friends at other places (that will remain unnamed to prevent banter). We haven't had anyone fail out of our class at UNC--as yet--with 6 months to go till graduation...even DcS. No summer make-ups here because we go to school year round, so yes we do study then.

1st and 2nd year class or clinic 8-5 M-F; I studied about 1-2 hrs/night Mon-Sat on average and did fine (top 5%, 95 part I). Took Sunday off. 3rd year still 8-5, but very little evening studying. 4th year is 10-4, long lunch (like most places). Work part-time...just 4-5 hrs/week on average since start of 2nd year (though that includes being paid for some of the research I do).
Each weekend is spent chilling with 3 ladies (before you get crazy ideas, two of 'em are my daughters). Life is great, especially 4th year. Just gotta hang around school enough to get my clinic attendance credit so as to graduate.

Life as a DDS student is great, if you make it that way.

Hey, we put the time in earlier in my dental school career so i'm taking time to enjoy my last year of set vacations in school.

Weekdays: class class class study study study
Fridays: drink drink drink drunk!
Saturday: football football football study
Sunday: football football study study study

repeat. Closer to exams, replace football with study.

Mondays - class from 8am-5pm.
I live a good drive from my school, so I usually get home and study rather than library.
7-9 study

Tuesday 9am-8pm class (2 hr break which is spent in lab carving)
9-12 (watch porn)

Wednesday- 8am-4pm
Thursday-8am-4pm(while everyone goes home @ 12, dental remains in the lab)
Friday- 8am-2pm(gosh I love fridays)

About 2 hours work on a good evening, 1 hr on evenings with no time.
All I am really doing these days is rushing PBL night before, and doing biochem labs that don't count for any final marks 😛

Yah, first year was more studying than second. Second has been all lab work and anal prosth. profs. I've still found time to train for an ironman and drink as much as my liver will allow, so it's not as bad as most of these people make it out to be. Don't listen to the "i study all the time, my life sucks" babble, it really isn't the end of the world. Anal profs and lab work suck, though, so if you can deal with that, you'll be fine.

We have weekly exams here, so you are basically studying for an exam at all times. You dont get a break. But if we have an exam on a Tues. night and our next exam isnt until the following week, then we will go out that Tuesday night.

As far as difficulty, depends on what you are trying to accomplish as a student. If you literally want to get C's, pass, get the degree and move on, then dental school is like undergrad. Its not that bad. However, if you are going for those A's to help you specialize, then the amount of work becomes exponentially greater. Regardless, plan on putting in your time.

same here in buffalo, for example this week we have 3 exams, one quiz, and a paper. what rezdawg rings a little true here, except i'd describe it like this: if you want C's then school is awful, if you want B's then its absolute hell, and if you want A's then it is the worst thing that you can possibly imagine

I'm not putting in the time to get the grades to specialize so much as I am just to stay afloat, and I know I am not the only one here that feels the same. Tricky class IV resin took the whole morning session (9-12), I'd never had to rebuild the entire distal half of a tooth before, particularly with the adjacent proximal surface cavitated too. After lunch, saw an easy perio patient at 1:30, root planed his upper arch and convinced him to let me put a few GI's on exposed roots next time so he doesn't brush his teeth in half. Out of the building by 3, went to the gym, home about 4:15.

Clinic days aren't always great, but this one was definitely a keeper. 😀

I had a few of those days where everything went great, the patients were on time, and you had good faculty. It really made me leave school those days feeling like a million dollars. But that was definately the exception... most of the time I felt like a buck-fifty.

Yeah - it is NOT like undergrad, at least not my undergrad - some classes it takes all I can do just to pull a C+. When you try to cram in all of (very detailed) human physiology into one trimester, things get bad. 🙁
