Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), the net was not around when I was in OD school. Nevertheless, I would have never dreamed of talking down, questioning and downright blasting practicing doctors when I was merely a lowly student.

I KNEW I didn't know enough to argue with a practicing doctor. What could I have possibly known as a 1st or 2nd year OD student?

So why do we have so many student here that question everything a licensed, practing OD says. We are here trying to help all of you. We are not bitter people trying to bring everyone down. You will be much better off knowing all there is to know. We are trying to give you all a very realistic view of what Optometry is all about such as:

Pros: Good money, Clean work, semi-security etc...

Cons: Corporate greed, constant back-stabbing from your colleagues and others, Redundency, Intense competition on every corner and alley, etc...

With all due respect and some undue, you students would do much better just asking questions and soaking in the knowledge and experience us seasoned ODs are willing to offer you instead of pretending you have your finger on the pulse of all optometry because you worked as a tech in some practice or whatever the case may be.

welcome to the future gramps

In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My pathway led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

I agree with you on some level and I am surprised at the tone some students take with practicing doctors on this site, but the fact of the matter is - I don't know you (or anyone else on this forum other than one doctor) from Adam. How do I know you're a practicing doctor? How do I know you even have anything to do with optometry? I don't. A certain amount of healthy skepticism is critical when viewing any resource on the Internet, particularly SDN. Furthermore, the fact that someone has graduated from optometry school doesn't mean that I would blindly accept anything and everything that they have to say. You can be wrong - even as a attending. I recognize that I can learn a great deal from doctors that I have come in contact with through SDN - and I have. I don't pretend to have a "finger on the pulse of optometry" because I worked in an office for a year, but I didn't enter this profession without knowing what I got myself in to. I still have A LOT to learn, and SDN is a great place to do it. I appreciate all of the doctors here... but I might still argue with some of you on occasion. 😉

You have a contributed a lot over the months to forums, and I believe you know about a lot issues that bother us practicing OD's. There are a lot of positives, but we sometimes do focus on the negatives. Maybe every OD (like myself) wishes his appointment book looked like a dentist, or your local Ophthalmologist. Full, and no vision plans to take. Again worst vision plans Davis Vision, Avesis, Eye-Med, ColeManagedVision. Heck at least with Spectera you can just sign up to do exams without selling glasses (this gains you access to UnitedHealthCare). You have to join Eye-Med to get Aetna's PPO access.
